Book reviews from the week of March 21st

I had a terrific week of reading.  I had three very good ARCs and the opportunity to read some new-to-me authors.  I also completed two reading challenges for the month.  There are some amazing releases this week and in the coming month.  Make sure to check the New Releases and Coming Soon pages for links.

Love is ageless in a community of the aging.

I loved this story of Carly and Ryan falling in love while taking care of their respective parents.  It is written in first person In addition to Carly and Ryan’s POV, the reader also has glimpses of POV from Ryan’s dad, Sal, and Carly’s mom, Stella.

Ryan is a Type A, follow-the-rules kind of guy.  He only takes action once it is carefully considered, and the consequences are thoughtfully weighed.  Carly is a fun-loving ski instructor and business owner.  She is spontaneous, a little wild, and a whole lot sassy.  I adored both of their characters and how real they felt to me. Initially they clash when they first meet, but it does not take long for them to appreciate each other for who they are.  I love the friendship they build.  I love their shared pain over the antics of their parents.  (Sal & Stella are a riot and I adored them).   I love the attraction between them, a seriously magnetic pull.  They are smoking hot, and some of their scenes are kindle melting.  I love how Carly pulls Ryan into some fun, and how Ryan pulls Carly to responsibility.

I laughed so much while reading this book.  I love the awkward parental love/adult children dynamic.  I love the senior living community where Sal & Stella live: a comedy gold mine.  I love the story of embracing love and seizing the day, regardless of conventions.  The epilogues provide a wonderful HEA and set up potential future books and also link this world of Sunny Creek, Florida, to our New York billionaires that we love so much.  I cannot wait for more.   I have yet to be disappointed by a book written by this author duo and I was not this time.  Love, romance, hot scenes, lovable characters, and laughs are all included in this fantastic rom-com.  It was exactly what I needed after kind of a crazy week.

330 Love Ln. (Cherry Falls Romance #13) by Mika Jolie

ARC: Release Date- 3/30/2021

This is my first read of the Cherry Falls series, though it is book #13.  Each book is a standalone.  This book tells the story of Millie and Tyler and it is written in first person from a dual POV.

This is a fairly short book at just over 120 pages, yet this author always amazes me with the depth of character development she can create within a shorter novel.  I absolutely adored Millie and Tyler.  Millie is a young woman who has dreams but holds herself back from pursuing them.   She is smart, feisty, loyal, and loving.  I loved her relationship with her two older brothers and her best friend, Jess.  Tyler has been through a lot, but he is pursuing his dream with the support of his friends and his grandfather.  They have both experienced devastating loss yet have an optimistic mindset.  I felt connected to both characters and their HEA.  I loved the ending of this book; such a sweet happily ever after with room to be even happier.

I read this in one nearly uninterrupted sitting, and I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed it. This may be a quicker read, but it still delivers the emotional punch of developed characters and story that is rarely found in a book of this length.  Love, emotion, steam, and hope are delivered in this book and I definitely want to spend more time in Cherry Falls.

I fell in love with Nick in “Hit or Miss” and I desperately wanted him to fall in love and get his happily ever after.  He finds it with Mazzy, a woman who was his best friend growing up until “the night” that changed everything.  Their story is written in first person from a dual POV.

Nick is a playboy doctor who is determined never to settle down until circumstances dictate that he needs to clean up his act.  Mazzy needs a husband fast and is brave when she approaches her former love who now hates her.  I love the way their history helps them understand each other.  There is a lot of slow burn in this book, and it takes them a while to move past old hurts and move forward.  I love the care they still have for each other despite the hurts.  I adored reading as Nick lets himself become the caring possessive guy he was hiding under the playboy.  I love Mazzy’s bravery in taking a chance with Nick.  The only thing I would change is that I wanted a little more detail near the end as things wrap up.  I would have loved actually reading about Mazzy being a bada$$ in the office.  There is humor and steam in this one.  Their HEA is sweet, and the bonus scene is both funny and sweet as we get a glimpse into their future.  This book can be read as a standalone though some characters from previous books make an appearance.

The Right Stud by Ilsa Madden-Mills & Tia Louise

I really enjoyed this romantic comedy set on the coast of South Carolina. It is written in first person from a dual POV.

Jax is a hottie home improvement guy with a YouTube channel hoping to make the big time with HGTV. I loved that he was not a huge success yet and that I got to see some of his struggles and the dilemmas he faces balancing success and his moral compass. I love that he has a love for restoration. He is smart and also empathetic. He sees Ashton and what is important to her. I love how hard he falls before he realizes he falls at all.

Ashton is getting over a rough year and trying to hang on. I love her sweet soul and her determination to succeed despite the obstacles. I love how she demands what she knows she deserves. The girl has a hot temper which leads to an awesome scene readers wont want to miss.

This book is well written and has fun secondary characters which include an eccentric senior boarder, a foul-beaked parrot, a goofy best friend, a goat, and a family of skunks. I laughed out loud many times. The book also has some steamy moments and I really enjoyed the chemistry between Jax and Ashton. The HEA is sweet and shows a future of dreams come true. This fun read was exactly what I needed and I recommend it.

The Red Zone (Boys of Fall #2 ) by Mari Carr

This was an excellent MMF book and I absolutely loved all of the characters. This is my first book by this author, though I have several of her books on my TBR. It is written in third person from multiple POV.

Oakley is a fun loving cowboy who is open to adventure and nearly anything. Joel is the good guy who always does the right thing, takes care of his momma and cares about what the people of small town, Quinn, think. Sadie is the bar owners daughter, a bartender, and a bit of a rebel. She doesn't believe love or a HEA are in her future so she just likes to have a good time. They are friends who flirt until the night that changes everything.

This book is super hot and yet still has emotional and funny moments. I love how Oakley and Joel love Sadie unconditionally. I appreciate that she doesn't initially feel she deserves that kind of love and trust. The most emotional story is Joel's as he comes to terms with his very real feelings for Oakley as well as Sadie. I adore their story arc as well as how they convince Sadie that they need all three of them to be truly complete and happy. I enjoyed the small town, the parents who have impact on the characters, and the friends who support them. This may be my first visit to the small town of Quinn, but it will not be my last. I cannot wait to read more.

Cheyenne has loved Cole since they were kids. Cole has been a widower for 9 years after the sudden death of his wife. When they finally acknowledge that the attraction is mutual, sparks fly. I love that Cheyenne recognizes that her love for Cole has grown and changed into adult feelings from a teen crush. I love that Cheyenne does not settle for less than she deserves. There are times when I wanted to smack Cole, even though I understood why he was making terrible decisions. I love the heat and emotion between the two characters. I love their families and friends. The small town of Bellamy Creek is adorable. Cole's daughter, Mariah, is a little girl who completely stole my heart.

This was a very enjoyable read and I feel like I need to read more about the folks in Bellamy Creek. It is written in first person from a dual POV.

The Anti-Bachelorette by T. L. Quinn

This is written in first person from Emory's POV. It tells the enemies-to-lovers story of her and her dad's best friend, Alaric. This was my first book by this author and it was an entertaining read.

I will admit that I did not find either Emory or Alaric very engaging. I really couldn't understand why they act the way they do toward each other. It just seemed juvenile. I would have loved more details about the characters. I never really felt like I had a clear physical description of Emory. Also, I would have loved to know how old Emory is when this story takes place. My guess is around 23 but I am not sure. Her words and actions seem very much younger. Alaric is a really grumpy guy that I never really felt like I got to know very well. I did like his protectiveness toward Emory, even if it was a bit over bearing at times. They certainly had some physical chemistry which led to some steamy scenes that border on hate $3x.

There are several things going on in this book. Enemies-to-lovers, age gap, daddy's best friend, workplace romance, and an element of danger. There are times when it almost seemed like too much. I would have loved it if the arguing between Emory and Alaric could have been set aside early on for real communication and relationship development. There were a few minor editing errors that should have been caught. The biggest negative for me was the authors use of objective pronouns in subjective portions of sentences. For example, "me an my dad", or "him and me." This may have been a stylistic choice by the author to express the character's voice, but I found it very distracting. It made Emory seem less intelligent than I wanted her to be as a feisty heroine. I liked the daddy's best friend/age gap parts of the story and I would have liked to read more that dealt with those elements.

Overall, it was a quick read that I enjoyed. I will be watching this author's work in the future.

A Tale of Three Signings (Spring 2024 book signing recap)

Over the past seven weeks I attended three book signings, each two weeks apart, I started at the Sweetgrass Author Event in Charleston, SC. From there I visited some family in West Virginia and Pennsylvania before my oldest daughter and I traveled to Ellicott City, MD, for Charm City Romanticon. After that, I returned home to Colorado before driving to Aurora for Readers Take Denver, where I was assisting Sara Madderson/Elodie Hart and also had a reader ticket. Below I will share some pictures and a recap of each signing as it was for me.  Sweetgrass was the fifth signing event I have attended that was put on by Southern Belles. It was also undoubtably the largest. With a stellar author lineup, there were a lot of tickets sold. In my opinion, probably too many. For a six hour signing, I was able to get to a shockingly few authors in my time there. They hit a few snags with this one.  First, let me talk about the city of Charleston.  Rich in history, with out of this world southern cu

Best Reads of 2023

2023 has come to an end and  as a result I have had some time to look back on my best reads from last year.  It is always fun to remember the fantastic books I read.  I love thinking about the worlds the authors created for my escape and enjoyment.  I also am able to see where I had some gaps in my reading.  I read most sub-genres and tropes, but I did not read a single fantasy romance last year.  That made me sad.  I will need to fix that in 2024.  My reading is typically on the lighter side of the spectrum.  Dark romance readers will only find a couple of books in that category here.  Most of my reads are also steamy, with open door scenes that are sometimes explicit and appropriate for mature readers.  My reviews are available on the blog if you need more details about what I liked about a book.  Also, I am including Amazon links to the books so you can read the blurb and decide for yourself if you think my favorite reads are books you might enjoy. Looking at the numbers at the end

Book reviews from the week of May 19th

Happy weekend. This week I read three ARCs and two books from my TBR.  All three ARCs will release the first week of June and the two books on my TBR have been on my kindle for a while. They served as perfect palette cleansers between these wonderful ARCs. Both books from my TBR offered heroines with disability. In The Marquess and I, Willow is blind. In Wolf Signs, the heroine is deaf. I felt like the authors handled both situations well within their stories and it made them interesting reads. Check out my reviews and add these to your TBR today if they grab you. I don't think you will regret it. Happy reading! My Royal Showmance (Park Avenue Promise #2)  by Lexi Blake ARC: Release Date- 06/04/2024 #Royal #SecretRomance #ARC Book two in the series is written in first person from Anika’s POV and ends in a HEA.
