Book reviews for books read from October 1st-6th

Happy weekend.  I have been a little under the weather this weekend after getting some vaccinations on Friday. The good news is that let me read all day yesterday.

I read three ARCs this week. They were all excellent reads.

I have considering some changes in my reading. In the past, I have had about a 50% arc ratio. More and more frequently, however, my ratio has been closer to 80%. The downside of this is that I don't get to read very many books on my TBR, and often mood reading isn't even a consideration. For example, I ended up with 13 ARCs scheduled for October. That leaves very little room for other books I want to read. After having this happen for several months, I know I need to make some changes. I am going to have to force myself to not sign up for very many PR reads in the future. I am also currently on too many ARC teams. Leaving some of them is a heart breaking decision. I wouldn't be on their team if I didn't love them. I am trying to narrow down my list and it is very difficult. I have no doubt I will still end up reading the books but without the pressure of reading by a certain date, that might be better for my mental health. Of course, I am certain I will still end up hyping the releases of my favorites. I can't not be their cheerleader.

As I contemplate my reading choices, I hope you have a wonderful week reading and these books make it onto your TBR. Happy reading!

Before Highland Sunset (Special Ops Scots #1)

by Kait Nolan

ARC: Release Date- 10/04/2024

#BrothersBestFriend #SecondChance #EnemiesToLovers #FakeRelationship #RomanticSuspense #SmallTown #ARC

Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this first book in a new spin-off series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA.

After reading the prequel One Fine Night, I knew I had to have Alex and Ciara’s story. This book begins three years after their sizzling night together. Ciara has returned to Glenlaig and is working as an event planner at Ardinmuir Castle. She is trying hard to avoid her ex-boyfriend who is desperately trying to convince her it’s not over by using not wonderful means. Alex returns to Glenlaig to begin an outdoor adventure business with his mates from the Royal Marines now that they are all separated from their service. It was inevitable they would run into each other again and sparks fly when they do.

Alex has some baggage, but he has never stopped loving Ciara. She has sought the spark they shared since he left her but has never found anything close. I loved how quickly he stepped in to help her with her problem ex. I appreciated that she didn’t make it easy for him. They face some danger along the way to their happy ending. But her brother, Ewan, Finn, and Collum work with Alex using their military skills to save the day.

I loved the light suspense element, the passion between Alex and Ciara, and the fabulous continuation of the friend/family group which began in Kilted Hearts. Well written with likeable characters, suspense, hot times, and romantic tenderness: this is another winner.

Just Between Us (King Family #3) by Lena Hendrix

ARC: Release Date- 10/15/2024

#FamilySeries #OppositesAttract #SecretRomance #RomanticSuspense #SmallTown

Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this book ends in a HEA. This is a series best read in order of publication as an underlying mystery unfolds over the series.

I have been waiting for Royal to get his HEA. He is a playboy and a jokester who is hiding the pain of maternal abandonment. We learn in this book that he is also a soft dom and I am here for it. He is so caring and confident, especially when it comes to Veda. He is a bit of a golden retriever. He is always seeking fun, love, and companionship. Veda is a driven perfectionist. She has mastered the control of herself and works hard to achieve the goal before her. She holds herself aloof to avoid attachments and is the ultimate black cat. Together they are uber-hot. With Royal, Veda can let go of her control and lean into a feminine softness inside herself that she rarely indulges.  I love how their physical relationship quickly leads to sharing vulnerabilities and emotional intimacies that are new to both of them.

As the third book in the series, many of the series’ mysteries are beginning to unfold. The King siblings are becoming closer as they tackle the challenge of finding the truth.  With two more books yet to come, I can only imagine what the author has in store for us. I am looking forward to JP and MJ getting their happy endings too.

Mr. Heartbreaker (The Nest #1) by Piper Rayne

ARC: Release Date- 10/15/2024

#BrothersBestFriend #SecretIdentity #Sports #ARC

Book one in a new hockey romance series takes readers back to the Den in Chicago. It has now been renamed the Nest as the Falcon hockey players now live there. Readers of the Grizzly series will recognize Ruby (a curmudgeon with a heart of gold), and readers from the Hockey Hotties series will be happy to see that Tweetie is back. Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA.

Rowan is the recently traded star center for the Falcons. He is under a lot of pressure to be the one to lead the team to a cup win. Kyleigh is the little sister of one of Rowan’s college teammates. Though they met in passing during his college years, Rowan does not remember her. When they meet again at a wedding, she gives him the name Leigh and they have a hot and steamy night together. Serendipity brings them back together and they form a no strings arrangement to get each other out of their systems.

This was spicy hot read with characters who have internal struggles and some family drama to address. I read it in one day as I couldn’t put it down. Rowan is truly something special. He thinks he doesn’t want a relationship, yet he is an excellent boyfriend. Kyleigh’s youth (25) holds her back at times as she avoids conflict and open communication. I appreciated that she had personal growth over the course of time this romance takes place. I loved their sweet HEA.  I adore Henry and Bodhi, and I seriously can’t wait for Henry’s HEA.

Book reviews from the week of June 7th

The weekend is almost over as I type this but this is me running behind this week. What a week it has been! I have worked a lot at the job, the hubby had surgery, and we celebrated both my 33rd wedding anniversary and Father's Day.  I read one ARC, two books from my TBR, and one new-to-me author. I have found that after I read a really good book I need to read something a little different to get over the book hangover. That happened twice this week. After I finished the Harlow James ARC, I read an escort book by Leigh James that has been on my kindle for ages. After I read Lyndsey Gallagher's newest release, I started Escort Training which I think I picked up free a while back. That led me down a rabbit hole to reading the whole series. I have decided to review that whole series together as opposed to reviewing each book individually as they are really one story on three stages. It was a fabulous variety of reads this week and now I need to get serious and get back to ARCs. ...

Book reviews for books read January 1st-10th

Happy weekend and Happy 2025! I am starting the year strong. I have read 3 ARCs, 1 full-length novel, and 3 more novellas so far this year. The 3 ARCs were all fun reads, the next book in the Boston Billionaire Bachelors series was a fun ride, and the three monster novellas were still an enjoyable escape from reality.  I am traveling unexpectedly this month after my dad was hospitalized.  I will spend the next week in West Virginia helping my brother and helping my dad get some strength back before I return home. I am hopeful that means some dedicated reading time while I am here since there is no shortage of snow. Until next week, happy reading. Book reviews for books read September 21st-30th

This review post is late due to a family emergency that happened about ten days ago now. I feel like I am finally getting my self together a little bit today and was able to put this together finally. During the last week of the month, I read one ARC, one book for book club, and three smutty novellas. Check out my reviews and add so books to your TBR today. My month in review. September turned out to be a good reading month for me. Most of the ARCs that I read that released in September, I actually read in August. That freed up some time to read from my TBR and finish two reading challenges. During the last week of the month, I finished the A to Z reading challenge. Earlier this month, I completed the B.A.N.G. Book Club reading challenge. I also took this as an opportunity to read new-to-me authors and fit in several novellas. Out of the 23 books I read and the 2 I did not finish, I read 19 new-to-me authors! That has to be a record for me. There is a place for smutty insta-love ...
