Book reviews from the week of December 11th

Happy weekend! The holidays are upon us and it has been a busy week.

I read two ARCs, three novellas, and two books from my TBR this week (one of which I read as a combination read & listen).  I also finally finished the Roan Parrish audiobook  I started before Thanksgiving.  I think there is a little something for everyone.  Three of these books were new-to-me authors an now I have some new favorites.  In a follow up to last week's post, one of these (A Holiday Lift) was actually a paperback I had on my shelf that I picked up in Philly.

I am hopeful my reviews will help you decide which ones you might like to add to your TBR. Happy reading!

Illegal Contact (Denver Mountain Lions #4) by Emily Silver

ARC: Release Date- 12/22/2022

This is book 4 in the series, but it can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA.  It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

I have been waiting for Knox’s story.  I had a feeling he liked Frankie from previous books and I was so happy to learn that he has been more than just liking her.  Real feelings have managed to sneak up on both Knox and Frankie as they start the new season.  Knox is a big guy with a bit of a cocky attitude and a soft heart.  He has been a good friend to his teammates.  He loves his mom and his grandma.  I love his sense of humor and his work ethic to always be the best.  He has a little baggage from his childhood, but it rarely pops up.  Frankie is the perfect heroine for Knox.  She is unafraid to dish his sass right back at him.  I love that she is a success in a male dominated profession.  I adore the fact that she loves the game as much as the players she coaches.  She is strong and tough and unafraid to go after what she wants, even if it means recalibrating.

This is a steamy read that quickly ventures into love before the characters realize they are there.  Knox and Frankie are hot in the bedroom, the kitchen, and everywhere else. I love the way they just understand each other and support each other even when it is hard.  Friendship and found family are important aspects of this series.  Knox has been there for his teammates and his team shows up for him when he needs them. I don’t know what else to say.  I loved this one.  It might be my favorite of the series.

Book five in the series must be read last.  It is a wrap up and touches on all the couples from the series.  It is written in first person from multiple POV.

This was a wonderful look at the four couples from the series as time has passed.  We see the team finally making it ot the Superbowl.  Marriages have taken place, children are present, and pets are well loved.  The team is more of a brotherhood than ever.  The women support each other when the team is playing ball. There are some hot and steamy moments, a few laughs, and some heart-warming emotions in this novella read.  It left me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.  It is a wonderful wrap to the series.

This should not be read until after the Denver Mountain Lions series if you are a reader who likes things in order.  Readers meet Logan in that series as a rookie.  This little novella tells the HEA story of Peter, Logan’s brother, and Nash as they find their HEA.  They have a steamy second chance in this short read. It also sets up the Dixon Creek series, and Logan’s story in particular.  It does exactly what it should and got me excited about the next series coming in 2023.

Window Shopping by Tessa Bailey

Audiobook Narrated by Alexa Morden and Sam Rushton

This standalone holiday romance is written in first person from an alternating dual POV and ends with a HEA. I picked up a paperback copy of this book for book club. It had been over a year since I read a paperback. I was reading more slowly than normal and I wasn't going to finish in time, so I also purchased the audiobook. Ultimately I think I listened to about half and read about half. The narration was phenomenal. I loved it. Sam Rushton has a drawl that perfectly matches Aiden's character. I could listen to him read anything. Alexa Morden also did an amazing job with Stella. I believe this could become an annual listen during the holidays.

Stella is starting over. She is putting her past behind her and trying to build a future. She is reserved, cautious, and a little rough around the edges due to her past. I love how she takes responsibility for her past actions and their consequences. I really appreciated the effort she puts into turning her life around and setting boundaries with her past.

Aiden is a sunshine-y, optimistic guy. He is a little quirky. He wears cute bow ties and smiles a lot. I love how he becomes intrigued by Stella and gives her a chance. I really loved how he made sure he gave other applicants that same chance out of fairness. I guess that is one thing I loved most about him: he has a very well-developed sense of fairness that he puts into practice in all areas of his life. I appreciated that he also has some baggage and he deals with it. I love that Stella gives him the motivation to set boundaries with his toxic family.

Aiden and Stella share an instant attraction that creates some hot and steamy moments as they become more than a boss and his employee. I love that Aiden is not as nice in the bedroom as he is in the rest of his life. Stella falling hard for Aiden was beautiful to read. Aiden helping Stella build her confidence by loving her as she is? Heart-melting.

I adored this book. The cover is cute. The story emotional and hot. The characters are layered and complex. It made me feel warm and happy inside.

A Very London Christmas (Love in London #3)
by Sara Madderson

This is my first book by this author. Though it is the third book in a series, it can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. I read the 2022 version which is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

Saoirse is an Irish woman working in London for the first time. Miles is a grumpy hotel magnate with the cutest 4 year old daughter. When Miles hires her to be his nanny for the month, she can't say no.

There was a lot to love about this. I appreciated how Miles becomes less grumpy when he lets down his guard with Saoirse. I love the way she is with Bea. Reading as they explore the ritzy side of London in the holidays was a lot of fun. Miles and Saoirse have amazing chemistry that quickly becomes more. The steam level is hot and just right. The ending was swoon-worthy and had all the holiday happy ever after I could want. I cant wait to read more of this series and this author.

This was a steamy short written in first person from an alternating dual POV. Jasper falls fast for his coworker. I really felt his character and his vulnerability. I lie the idea of texting the wrong number but the right man. This one packs a few laughs and a lot of heat. It was a quick and hot read for the holidays.

Originally a short story, this novella is expanded to include a true HEA. It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

I picked this up as a paperback at Indies Invade Philly. I love a quick, steamy holiday read and this fits the bill. On top of that it is super cute. Hot night in the office? Stuck in an elevator together after not taking for a week? Dean teaches Holly to love Christmas again. He is an earnest hero you can't help but love. I really appreciated how they each understand the other's work load and commitment to their job. I adored the expansion of the short. This is a wonderful quick holiday read with all the feels

Best Laid Plans (Garnet Run #2) by Roan Parrish

Narrated by Greg Boudreaux

5 STARS

This is book two of the Garnet Run series but can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. It is written in third person from an alternating dual POV.

This was my first book by this author and I listened to it in the audiobook format. Narrator Greg Boudreaux was fantastic in differentiating between the characters as he brought them to life. He perfectly captured the vulnerability of both Charlie and Rye, as well as Rye's sometimes hard edges.

Charlie was everything to me. I adored him. Rye was perfect for him. I love the comfort they settle into. I really appreciated the slow rate their relationship progresses as they build trust and friendship on the way to forever. They have some steamy moments. They also have many moments where they are breaking down walls they have erected against emotional vulnerability. It was beautiful. Rye has a perfect acceptance of all people that I absolutely loved. The non-verbal communication they build between them was wonderful to hear. Charlie being able to differentiate between the many types of glare that Rye has was kind of funny and very touching.

I loved this audiobook with an emotional and steamy love story.

A Tale of Three Signings (Spring 2024 book signing recap)

Over the past seven weeks I attended three book signings, each two weeks apart, I started at the Sweetgrass Author Event in Charleston, SC. From there I visited some family in West Virginia and Pennsylvania before my oldest daughter and I traveled to Ellicott City, MD, for Charm City Romanticon. After that, I returned home to Colorado before driving to Aurora for Readers Take Denver, where I was assisting Sara Madderson/Elodie Hart and also had a reader ticket. Below I will share some pictures and a recap of each signing as it was for me.  Sweetgrass was the fifth signing event I have attended that was put on by Southern Belles. It was also undoubtably the largest. With a stellar author lineup, there were a lot of tickets sold. In my opinion, probably too many. For a six hour signing, I was able to get to a shockingly few authors in my time there. They hit a few snags with this one.  First, let me talk about the city of Charleston.  Rich in history, with out of this world southern cu

Best Reads of 2023

2023 has come to an end and  as a result I have had some time to look back on my best reads from last year.  It is always fun to remember the fantastic books I read.  I love thinking about the worlds the authors created for my escape and enjoyment.  I also am able to see where I had some gaps in my reading.  I read most sub-genres and tropes, but I did not read a single fantasy romance last year.  That made me sad.  I will need to fix that in 2024.  My reading is typically on the lighter side of the spectrum.  Dark romance readers will only find a couple of books in that category here.  Most of my reads are also steamy, with open door scenes that are sometimes explicit and appropriate for mature readers.  My reviews are available on the blog if you need more details about what I liked about a book.  Also, I am including Amazon links to the books so you can read the blurb and decide for yourself if you think my favorite reads are books you might enjoy. Looking at the numbers at the end

Book reviews from the week of May 19th

Happy weekend. This week I read three ARCs and two books from my TBR.  All three ARCs will release the first week of June and the two books on my TBR have been on my kindle for a while. They served as perfect palette cleansers between these wonderful ARCs. Both books from my TBR offered heroines with disability. In The Marquess and I, Willow is blind. In Wolf Signs, the heroine is deaf. I felt like the authors handled both situations well within their stories and it made them interesting reads. Check out my reviews and add these to your TBR today if they grab you. I don't think you will regret it. Happy reading!
