Book reviews from the week of May 1st

While waiting for the next round of ARCs to arrive, I used this week to get a jump on several monthly reading challenges and to finally read the Catherine Bybee book that has been sitting on my kindle for months since it released. I also finished the Nashville Fury series by Chelle Sloan with her wonderful surprise baby romance.  An Unexpected Distraction was available as a Kindle read & Listen title and I listened to the first half while spring cleaning before switching to the eBook to finish. The narration was very good and I never felt like I was missing anything (which is the biggest challenge I have with listening to an audiobook I have not read already).  I finally got back to the Ice Planet Barbarians after two years to meet a reading challenge requirement of Sci-Fi Romance.  I really missed that world and have already downloaded book 11 in the series.  Emily Silver's "Royal Reckoning" is the first in a series of three royal books and met another reading challenge to read a royal book.  I also already downloaded book 2 in the series and I am really looking forward to reading it.  Finally, I read the last book in Susan Stoker's Silverstone series.  (I still need to go back and read book one.  That's what happens when I somehow started with book two of the series.) It met reading challenge requirements for two different groups by giving me a book that was "military" and also had a single-mom heroine.  overall, I had a very enjoyable week.  All of the books were entertaining and there was a variety to them that I really enjoyed.

I hope my reviews help you decide if they are books you might want to add to your TBR.  I wish everyone a fantastic week and happy reading!

An Unexpected Distraction (Richter #3)

by Catherine Bybee

Audible narration by Lori Prince and Joe Arden

Book three in the series follows Jax back to London to deal with some family drama and fall in love along the way. It is written in third person from multiple perspectives. As this was available as a kindle unlimited read & listen, I listened to the first half of this book on audio while cleaning. The narrators do a wonderful job bringing the characters, and all of their various accents, to life in the audible narration. I found it very easy to listen to and follow the story without becoming lost.

I have loved all of the books in the Richter series. Jax has always been smart and tough in previous books and I loved reading her get a HEA. Andrew is sweet, smart, and completely respects Jax, even as the dangerous elements of her career are revealed to him. I love how he just rolls with everything that comes at him from the first time he picks her up at the airport to the end of the book. He never stood a chance not to fall for Ja because she is amazing.

The Richter saga continues in this book while Claire learns things about her family she never knew. I love seeing the gang show up and help both in training and when danger appears. This is another excellent addition to this wonderful author's book list.

Off Track (Nashville Fury #2) by Chelle Sloan

Book 2 in the Nashville Fury series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. It is written in first person from a dual POV.

When a blind date leads to a fling, and that fling leads to feelings the two main characters of this book that it is time to call it quits. It doesn't take long for them to find out that they are tied together permanently through a baby on the way.

Coach Davis has been a player until he meets Bethany. Bethany has been searching for love till she decides to take the player at face value and have a fling. I love these two together. Bethany is a strong southern woman who doesn't put up with Davis when he is being unkind. Davis has a lot of responsibilities in his life, and he has to come to terms with his ability to have more love. They have really good chemistry leading to steamy open door scenes. There are moments of laughter and moments where it is impossible not to feel the romance. This was a wonderful read that I really enjoyed. I can now say I recommend this whole series.

Barbarian's Heart (Ice Planet Barbarians #10)

by Ruby Dixon

5 STARS

Time flies. I borrowed this book in June 2020 and it took me nearly two years to get back to my big blue aliens. I have missed them so much! Book ten in the series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA between Stacy and Pashov. It is written in first person from a dual POV.

Stacy is a character who has been in the background. She was one of the girls in the tubes, so she did not experience the initial trauma some of the others experienced. She and Pashov were one of the first to resonate, so she has had a mate and his family to help her adapt to this weird world. Her experience has been very different from the heroines in previous books. Because she has been fairly comfortable, it is even harder for her when a cave collapse nearly kills her mate. Then he wakes and cannot remember the last two years. He has no recollection of her, their child, or any of the wonderful times they have had together. The alien looks at her like she is a stranger and he acts like a stranger to her.

Stacy is not the typical strong heroine. Her strength lies in her ability to nurture and show kindness to others. She is not fearless or brave the way some have been. She has a debilitating fear of heights, which causes some trouble along the way. She has spent most of the last two years inside a cave, so she is weak in the face of the planet's harsher elements. Pashov is confused by Stacy. Having lost the two years of memories, he doesn't understand Stacy's grief and pain when she sees him now. He struggles with frustration at not remembering, PTSD from the cave collapse, and uncertainty as to how to act with a strange alien mate and a child he doesn't remember.

This was an excellent look at a couple who learn to love again after trauma and tragedy. They have to get to know each other all over again while facing their fears and insecurities. I felt like that was really well-done. I loved the five flame heat level and the ability to finally get to know these two characters. I am very excited to see what happens next as the tribe builds their new life in the canyon.

Royal Reckoning (Ainsworth Royals #1) by Emily Silver

#Royal #OppositesAttract

5 STARS

Book one in the Ainsworth Royal series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. It is written in first person from a dual POV.

Ellie is tired of the limitations being royal places on her choices in her life. She runs away and meets Sean, the hot, tatted-up owner of a a tattoo studio. When Sean realizes that his new receptionist has nowhere to go, he takes care of her. Ellie is blown away by the kind and gruff man. I loved Ellie's determination to experience just a little bit of life where she makes her own decisions and can be completely herself. She is caught in a dilemma when she falls completely in love with the gruff commoner who stole her heart. How can she combine her two worlds? How can she keep him in her royal life?

I love how they connect immediately. I love their flirtation and the way that Sean woos her. It was very romantic. I love how he loves everything about her, even the things she is self-conscious about. They have hot times as the heat between them becomes too much to deny. Sean is a wonderful hero. He falls hard for his pink haired goddess and I love how he is with her. They have a couple bumps on the way to their HEA, but that makes it that much sweeter.

This was an enjoyable read that has been on my TBR for months. I was so happy to finally get to this series. I don't want to stop reading, and I can't wait to tackle the rest.

Trusting Cassidy (Silverstone #4) by Susan Stoker

#RomanticSuspense #SingleMom #ActionAndAdventure #Latinah #LatinoH

4 STARS

Book four in this series follows the final member of the Silverstone team as he finds love with the one that got away. It is written in third person and ends with a HEA. In addition, there are multiple epilogues from each couple's POV at various points in the future to fully wrap up both this book and the series. I really enjoyed learning how everyone was in the future, especially the kids. It really made me wish I had read the series in order, as I still need to read book one. I don't think it will stop me from going back to read it though.

Cassidy is a heroine who has made some terrible choices and landed herself in a whole lot of trouble. Even as the book progresses, she tends to act before thinking on several occasions, putting herself and others in danger. She was not my favorite heroine, but I did not hate her. Leo (Gramps) does an amazing job as he goes undercover to rescue Cassidy and Mario. I have loved him through the whole series and I was really happy to see him in love. He is protective, yet respectful, throughout the story. He gives Cassidy the time she needs to stand on her own before pursuing the relationship to the level of forever that he wants. I adored his relationship with Mario. I really appreciated that he immediately loved him for who he was as a person and accepted his differences without any issue.

Cassidy and Leo have plenty of steam and the level of drama is related to external threats, not relationship angst. I appreciate that about these books, as the couples are pretty solid and the challenges come from outside their relationships. Mario was a fun kid who was placed in dangerous situations and yet survived and thrived because of the love from his mom and from Leo. I adore the extended found family that the team develops. This has been a very good series and I have enjoyed reading it.

Book reviews for books read January 19th-24th

Happy weekend! I decided that since I hit 7 books this week I should just go ahead and push this out today. I will read at least one more today but you will see that review next week. I had a gap between ARCs! I went back and finished the Kings of Avalier series that I started in February 2024.  SO GOOD! They are new adult, which is not my norm, but the fantasy realm made them un-put-down-able. I am thrilled to meet the author in Phoenix in a couple of weeks. I read the next book in the J. Saman series I am making my way through. Those Abbot-Fritz brothers are something else. I adore that whole family. I read four novellas with 2 of those being new-to-me authors. Coco Miller's book was a fun billionaire read, and Regine Abel's Prime Mating Agency was GOLD. You will see in my review that I loved this first in series book, and I am super excited to read the rest of them. I read a wonderful mafia novella by Lee Savino. He is truly obsessed with the girl without it being a terri...

Book reviews for books read October 20th-31st

I read two arcs in the second part of October. They were both wonderful reads. Obviously, my personal life has impacted my reading as I only finished 5 books this month. I can't tell you when the last time was that I read so little. The positive part was all of the books I read this month were very good. Until next time, happy reading! Can't Believe You Came (Mile High Matched #5)  by Christina Hovland ARC: Release Date- 10/24/2025 #CinnamonRollHero #OppositesAttract #ARC I am voluntarily writing this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book. It is written in third person, can be read as a standalone, and ends with a HEA. I have loved this series from the beginning. It is wonderful to finally see the last Dvornakov get their HEA. Zach is a cinnamon roll hero to love. He falls first, fast, and hard for Piper. Piper, who is type A personified, does her best to control every situation she is in and Zach is an outlier. His calm and steady presence c...

Book reviews from the week of June 7th

The weekend is almost over as I type this but this is me running behind this week. What a week it has been! I have worked a lot at the job, the hubby had surgery, and we celebrated both my 33rd wedding anniversary and Father's Day.  I read one ARC, two books from my TBR, and one new-to-me author. I have found that after I read a really good book I need to read something a little different to get over the book hangover. That happened twice this week. After I finished the Harlow James ARC, I read an escort book by Leigh James that has been on my kindle for ages. After I read Lyndsey Gallagher's newest release, I started Escort Training which I think I picked up free a while back. That led me down a rabbit hole to reading the whole series. I have decided to review that whole series together as opposed to reviewing each book individually as they are really one story on three stages. It was a fabulous variety of reads this week and now I need to get serious and get back to ARCs. ...
