Book reviews from the week of April 24th

This week was a full week of reading.  I read four full-length novels and five novellas. I was able to read an ARC of the upcoming "Greene Family Vacation" by Piper Rayne, which sets the stage for the rest of that series.  In addition to the ARC novella of the Greene Family, I fell down a bit of a historical fantasy hole as I read several of the novellas that are tied together in the Lore of the Lucius Ring.  I started at the end with Susan Stoker's book "The Guardian Mist" and ended up going back to the beginning to get more of the ring's history.  It was a fun and non-typical way to begin my reading week. I read "Trusting Molly" by Susan Stoker, and I fell hard for Molly who is a fantastic heroine who defines survival.  I finally got back to the Nashville Fury series by Chelle Sloan.  This book has been on my kindle for several months and I was thrilled to finally read it.  I also got to read Kayley Loring & Connor Crais' book set around St. Patrick's Day.  (Who doesn't love a hot Irishman?) I also read book one of the Angel Fire series by Marie Johnston.  This book created a fantasy world of Numen and sets the stage for conflict in multiple realms. This week included three new-to-me authors, and a wild mix of suspense, comedy, fantasy, and historical for a very full week.  I hope my reviews help you determine some new books to add to your TBR and I wish everyone a fantastic next week.  Happy reading!

Greene Family Vacation (Greene Family Series #6.5)

by Piper Rayne

ARC: Release Date- 05/10/2022

This novella in the Greene Family series is written in first person from multiple POV.

The Greene family, or most of them, go on a family vacation to Hawaii.  I really enjoyed the multiple POV to the family vacation.  I love how it sets up books for Xavier & Clara, Mandi, and Chevelle.  There are indications of things that may have happened without concrete affirmations.  I expect some of those affirmations will happen in the character books to come. This was a tease and I loved it. I really enjoyed reading more about the Greene family and I am seriously looking forward to how the next books play out.  And the three grandmas are hilarious, as usual.

Trusting Molly (Silverstone #3) by Susan Stoker

Book three in the Silverstone series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. It is written in third person from multiple perspectives.

Molly has had a lot of bad things happen to her in her life even before she is kidnapped and held in a Nigerian jungle. I loved this character so much, I can't even get it all in words. She is strong, determined, intelligent and a real survivor. I loved her creativity in finding ways to survive. I admired her never-give-up attitude, which is tested time and time again. It was a wonderful thing to read as she gets the friendship and support from the Silverstone crew that she had never had but always deserved.

Mark (Smoke) is a fantastic hero. His protectiveness toward Molly was really special. When he literally falls hard for her: his life is changed forever in an instant. I loved how much respect and admiration he shows Molly from the very beginning. I appreciated that they had some things in common that allowed them to bond quickly. Even more, I love the friendship they form over time before they become physical. There are steamy scenes, danger, and an unquenchable drive to survive and gain their happy ending. This book moved me. I loved it.

A Very Vegas St. Patrick's Day (A Very Holiday #3)

by Kayley Loring and Connor Crais

This is book three in the series, but any of them can be read as a standalone and they all end in a HEA. There are some overlapping characters in the series and I am sure readers will want to read them all. This book is written in first person from multiple POV.

Nolan is a hot Irishman that readers have met in previous books. I have been waiting for his HEA. Cora is the perfect heroine for him. She is willing to have fun and keep him grounded at the same time. I can hardly blame her for not being able to resist him. He is charming, funny, witty, and hot: all with an Irish accent. It's a no-brainer. I love the trust and the fun they have in the bedroom. I adore the relationship Nolan builds with Ashton, her 10-year-old son. There are some seriously special moments there. I could hear Nolan and his sexy accent clearly throughout the book. 100% swoon-worthy. I appreciated that Cora had some doubts, though she tested me at times. I couldn't walk away from Nolan- I might have barnacled myself to that one. The secondary characters are entertaining and the pace of the book is stellar. It was hard to put down. Ashton was a gem. I can see some future possibilities with Imogen, Piper, and Ashton in starring roles. I can't wait! This was exactly the book I needed right now.

Off the Record (Nashville Fury #1) by Chelle Sloan

Book one in the Nashville Fury series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. It is written in first person from a dual POV.

I started this series on book #2.5 last fall and then read and ARC of #3. I knew I needed to go back and read the beginning and I am so glad I did. Hunter and Sadie are everything together. They take a practical approach to their relationship, setting guidelines they know will keep them from crossing lines that would compromise the ability of either one of them doing their jobs to the full potential. Their relationship is complicated. It starts off as a hidden relationship, each of them knowing that their employers, and the public would have concerns about a conflict of interest.

Sadie has worked her tail off to get where she is. She has developed sources inside the Fury organization, and put in the hours to get the best scoops. I adored her! I loved her work ethic and her passion to succeed. Hunter has also worked hard to get where he is. He has battled constant criticism from his father and has made the choice to take a different path than the one others would have chosen for him. He falls hard and fast for Sadie. They come together with a lot of flirtation and heat. More than anything though, I love the friendship they form. I love how they support each other. I swooned- seriously swooned- at some of the romantic moments between them. They have a one the best first dates I have ever read.

Now that I have read book one, I am on to book two and may have to reread the ones I read already. I claim Hunter as my book boyfriend. Mine. This well-written, steamy sports romance was a top read this week and I highly recommend it.

Of Love and Legend (Ever My Love: The Lore of the Lucius Ring)

by Kathryn Le Veque

Set in medieval England, the lore of the Lucius Ring is the central theme to this quick novella. Valeria and Tyren have known each other since childhood. Over last few years, they have both had to do things they felt bad about to survive. When Tyren finally makes a bid for Valeria's hand, secrets come to light which could tear them apart forever. Written in third person, this was a quick and enjoyable read with a satisfying HEA.

With Dreams (With Dreams Only of You)

Set in medieval England, this novella is written in third person as Sir Eryx and Sir Robbin compete for the hand of Lady Frederica. This tells the backstory of the Theodosia sword which is connected to the story of the Lucius Ring. I enjoyed Frederica's level head and her bravery in this story. Sir Robbin is truly despicable while Sir Eryx is a gallant knight. This was a quick and enjoyable read with a HEA.

Forever her Champion by Suzan Tizdale

3.5 STARS

Set in the early 1500's, this quick novella is part of a series following the history of the Lucius Ring. It is written in third person and set in the Scottish Highlands.

Rianna and Aiden have both had very difficult lives. The one bright spot is the short time in their childhood when they were friends. When Rianna sees Aiden again many years later, she realizes that he has changed. She is a brave heroine who is willing to take risks to survive while she looks for the father that left her as a child. I loved Rianna's character. Aiden was protective of her, but did not believe he was good enough for her because of his past. Action and basically a road trip allow them to share secrets with one another and give into the intense attraction they feel for each other. Because of the novella's length, this story resolves quickly and the characters get their HEA with only a little drama.

The Guardian Mist by Susan Stoker

#FatedMates #InstaLove

4 STARS

Roman and Rin have a modern day love story influenced by centuries of lore. Written in third person, the book begins with a flashback to 128 A.D. and the story of Rin's ancestor and how the ring and the lore came to be in her family.
Roman and Rin feel an instant connection. Readers learn how Rin has been searching for the family ring so her twin sister can find true love and break the family curse. Roman is enthralled with Rin when they meet. I love the way they are drawn to each other. There is a mystical element in the story as the Guardian Mist protects Rin and Roman to ensure they get their HEA.
It turns out that this novella was part of an anthology and this book is the end of the ring's journey. So I felt the need to go back and read the other stories, which I am in the process of doing. This book does stand alone for readers who are not as compulsive as I am.

Angel Fire (Angel Fire #1) by Marie Johnston

#Fantasy

3 STARS

This is my first book by this author, and the first book in a series. It is written in third person from multiple POV.

I liked the world and the intricate plot the author created. I think that the characters were engaging. Odessa was a complex and brave heroine who was willing to risk everything when it was right. Bryant is a brave and valiant warrior marred by battle scars. I love the attraction between them, and when they finally get there- the heated scenes they share. They are basically strangers when they bond, but I have to admit to a little frustration at the interruptions to them figuring each other out sooner.

There is a lot going on in this book. A lot of characters are introduced and the world has to be created. It takes time, and sometimes the time it takes to do it feels like it is dragging. I will confess to skimming passages. I found the relationship between Bryant and Odessa much more interesting than the overall conspiracy plot which takes up so much of the book.

This book ends with Bryant and Odessa happily together but without the conspiracy resolved. It looks like that plot line is carried into the next books in the series. I am not sure if I will pursue any more books in the series, but I found this to be an interesting world to spend a day in.

A Tale of Three Signings (Spring 2024 book signing recap)

Over the past seven weeks I attended three book signings, each two weeks apart, I started at the Sweetgrass Author Event in Charleston, SC. From there I visited some family in West Virginia and Pennsylvania before my oldest daughter and I traveled to Ellicott City, MD, for Charm City Romanticon. After that, I returned home to Colorado before driving to Aurora for Readers Take Denver, where I was assisting Sara Madderson/Elodie Hart and also had a reader ticket. Below I will share some pictures and a recap of each signing as it was for me.  Sweetgrass was the fifth signing event I have attended that was put on by Southern Belles. It was also undoubtably the largest. With a stellar author lineup, there were a lot of tickets sold. In my opinion, probably too many. For a six hour signing, I was able to get to a shockingly few authors in my time there. They hit a few snags with this one.  First, let me talk about the city of Charleston.  Rich in history, with out of this world southern cu

Best Reads of 2023

2023 has come to an end and  as a result I have had some time to look back on my best reads from last year.  It is always fun to remember the fantastic books I read.  I love thinking about the worlds the authors created for my escape and enjoyment.  I also am able to see where I had some gaps in my reading.  I read most sub-genres and tropes, but I did not read a single fantasy romance last year.  That made me sad.  I will need to fix that in 2024.  My reading is typically on the lighter side of the spectrum.  Dark romance readers will only find a couple of books in that category here.  Most of my reads are also steamy, with open door scenes that are sometimes explicit and appropriate for mature readers.  My reviews are available on the blog if you need more details about what I liked about a book.  Also, I am including Amazon links to the books so you can read the blurb and decide for yourself if you think my favorite reads are books you might enjoy. Looking at the numbers at the end

Book reviews from the week of May 19th

Happy weekend. This week I read three ARCs and two books from my TBR.  All three ARCs will release the first week of June and the two books on my TBR have been on my kindle for a while. They served as perfect palette cleansers between these wonderful ARCs. Both books from my TBR offered heroines with disability. In The Marquess and I, Willow is blind. In Wolf Signs, the heroine is deaf. I felt like the authors handled both situations well within their stories and it made them interesting reads. Check out my reviews and add these to your TBR today if they grab you. I don't think you will regret it. Happy reading!
