Book reviews from the week of April 17th

This has been an incredible reading week for me.  I read three ARCs, two books to meet reading challenge and a book for book club. Two of these authors were new to me and I have certainly added them to my new favorites category.  This week I read some romantic comedy, mystery, fantasy, romantic suspense, and a mafia romance.  Who could ask for more?  Everything from a marriage of convenience to fated mates was covered by this week's reads.  A couple of the books contain some heavier content, so I have included trigger/content warnings in my reviews here.  Of the ARCs, Lucy Score's book just released so you should grab it now for a fun read.  Christina Hovland's book releases this coming week and readers are going to love Knox and Irena.  Tawna Fenske's next installment in the Assassins in Love series will release May 12th, but readers can grab the prequel and book one now (which I highly recommend).  I read Ruthless Creatures for a book club discussion that I am dying to have.  Mafia romance is not normally my jam but it was so well written I really want to read the rest of the series.  Unlocking Adeline is a stand alone book that has been on my TBR for months and I was thrilled to read it and meet a challenge goal  of reading a fantasy romance at the same time.  Trusting Taylor is listed as one on Amazon's top romance reads of 2021. The heroine has a disability called prosopagnosia (face blindness) that adds some interesting elements to her story of being stalked by a serial killer. Reading it allowed me to meet a kindle spring reading challenge as well as the reading goal of a book with a name in the title for Carol's Crazy Bookish World.  (The Riley Thorn book and Unlocking Adeline also meet this goal.)  I hope my reviews help you determine if these books are ones you want to read too.  I honestly would recommend all of them and wish everyone a week of happy reading.

Riley Thorn and the Blast from the Past (Riley Thorn #3) by Lucy Score

ARC: Release Date- 04/21/2022

Though book three in the Riley Thorn series can be read as a standalone as a mystery, readers will want to read the series in order. There are several recurring characters and history between them, and readers will benefit greatly from having read the books in order.  This book is written in third person from a dual perspective.

Riley and Nick have a new mystery to solve while trying to complete an extensive home renovation, maintain their relationship, and deal with constant drop-ins from the neighbors.  Riley is learning more about her psychic abilities every day, and there is sometimes a learning curve involved.

I loved the new mystery.  There were many laughs along the way.  Riley and Nick continue to have scorching heat between them.  I have always loved their banter, and it is still there in this book.  Family and friends are actively present and “helpful” to Riley and Nick.  This sucked me in and wouldn’t let go.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable read and an excellent addition to the series.

Married to the Rockstar (Mile High Rocked #3)

ARC: Release Date- 04/29/2022

Book three in the series of interconnected standalones, this book can be read by itself and ends with a HEA.  It is written in third person from a dual perspective.

Irina needs her big break in the acting world.  Knox needs a relationship so the tabloids stop painting him as a not-so-nice player.  When Irina’s best friend, Courtney, suggests they have a marriage of convenience to solve both their problems, they agree.  Afterall, they get along well and are friends. Neither one expects that their relationship will become more than platonic.  Neither one of them is looking for forever: nor are they sure forever can be a thing at all.  It seems like the perfect solution.

I love the way their friendship allows them to support each other even before love enters the picture.  When they decide to make their marriage “real” for as long as it lasts, there is a whole lot of heat between them.  (Prepare for your kindle to be steamed up.)  I love that they like each other as people and respect and support each other’s dreams. I love how they defend each other against outside forces, like Knox’s mother.  I adore the fact that they communicate about their relationship and the compromises they need to make to succeed with their busy careers.  There is nothing better than a rock star who ends up besotted with a woman after not believing that could happen.  That it is a mutual besottedness brings all the feels to the story.  I could feel how much they missed each other when they were apart.  The ending is perfect, and I really liked the fact that their hurdle was not something contrived to keep them apart.  They have a supportive found family of friends that are important to their story, and I adored that.

There are laughs, a wedding that is anything but traditional, lots of heat, and a real emotional connection that with make you swoon.  I 100% enjoyed and recommend this latest installment of the Mile High Rocked series.  I can’t wait for Tanner to find love next.

Killer Moves (Assassins in Love #2) by Tawna Fenske

Book two in this series can be read as a standalone, but readers will want to read the books in series order to gain the full benefit of recurring characters and interconnected story lines. This book is written in third person from a dual perspective and ends with a HEA.

Once his record is expunged, Matteo returns home after being in prison for the last couple of years.  One of his first stops is to see his sisters.  He is surprised to run into his ex, who has a little boy who looks a whole lot like him.  Renee has been on the run.  She has tended to pick the wrong men in her life, which has not been easy.  She has a few ex-boyfriends that have served time and with them comes some baggage that leads her t be on the run.

Matteo is a wonderful protector.  He is immediately committed to helping Renee and her son stay safe.  Renee is stronger than she realizes.  AJ, her three-year-old son, is beyond adorable.  I love what a good mom Renee is to AJ.  I loved the relationship that Matteo immediately forms with AJ.  There are some downright adorable moments. The elements of danger and suspense were well done.  I adore how Matteo, Dante, and Seb can work together to take of Renee, AJ, Nic, and Jen.  (Not that Nic, Jen and even Renee aren’t capable of taking care of themselves.  They certainly do well there too.)  Matteo and Renee have plenty of heat between them and some steam to their story. I was fully engaged in why Renee needed to run and the resolution of that problem.  I am seriously looking forward to book three as these men, who have lived in the gray area of life, find love and forever as the men they are at heart.

Ruthless Creatures (Queens & Monsters #1)

This was my first book by this author, though I own several on my kindle. I was very impressed. The level of character development and the intricacy of the story made this book impossible to put down. It is super-steamy/melt-your-kindle hawt too.

Kage is uber-possessive and protective once he meets Natalie. He understands that loving her comes with risks but he cannot stay away. Natalie finds Kage to be a little terrifying in a way that makes her feel things for the first time in way too long. I love the banter between them. They seem to get each other and accept each other, faults and all, very quickly. I love that Natalie is able to be completely herself with Kage, and that she trusts him completely even though it would seem like she can't. I really wasn't sure how the author was going to make their seemingly impossible relationship have a HEA but she does. I loved and understood the massive emotional swings that Natalie takes over the course of the book. Grief, depression, fear, apathy, anger, and determination are some of the prevalent feelings that Natalie grows through. Kage's gentleness with Natalie while still being passionate was a wonderful thing to read. Their open door bedroom scenes are explicit and very, very hot.

They have each been through some traumatizing things, especially Kage. Learning his background and how he came to be the man he is was enlightening and understandable. There are moments of violence in this book, like many mafia books. Mobsters get shot and occasionally tortured. Book one of this series also sets up for book two, which focuses on Natalie's best friend, Sloane. I fell in love with Sloane in this book and now I am dying to read her story. She is the best friend everyone needs in their life.

Overall, I was blown away by this book. It is definitely one of my top reads of the month. I can't wait to read more by this author.

CW/TW: Gun violence on the page, light bondage and spanking, vague description of rape, torture, and murder (briefly mentioned secondary characters that were children).

Unlocking Adeline (Skeleton Key) by J.D. Hollyfield

This has been on my TBR for months and I was thrilled to finally get to read it and to meet a reading challenge goal. This book is primarily written in first person from Addie's POV with two exceptions. The prologue is written in third person and is a flashback to Addie as a little girl. There is one chapter written in first person from Locke's POV.

Adeline and Lockelan are bonded mates that have been separated. He take her to his realm, even though he doesn't like the idea of marriage. His actions are a little complicated, and readers are enlightened to his motives when he finally gets his chapter. Addie is feisty and sassy, which sometimes works for her and sometimes works against her. There are steamy scenes that solidify their bond to a certain extent, but these two love to argue with each other about everything. There are elements of danger and betrayal at play to try to keep them apart. The magical and fantasy elements were fun. I loved Christof and Greta, the sorcerer, who are both wonderful secondary characters.
Overall, I liked the book but I wanted a little more, especially from Locke. For a fun and fast fantasy read I do recommend it.

TW: Attempted rape of h, not by H, but she escapes. Knife violence.

Trusting Taylor (Silverstone #2) by Susan Stoker

4.5 STARS

It is hard to believe, because I actually have 19 of this author's titles unread on my kindle, but this is the first book I have actually read by this author. I knew I would like her. I also know that sometimes her books lean toward darker content, which I need to be in a specific mood to read. Knowing that, I also recognize that I probably won't be able to binge very many of her books in a row, despite how much I like her writing. This is book two in a series, but functions as a standalone with a HEA. The series follows the interconnected stories of four men, formerly Delta Force, who are best friends and run private ops on the side of their above-board towing business. It is written in third person from multiple perspectives.

Eagle is a wonderful character who is a super recognizer, never able to forget a face or a name. Taylor suffers from a condition where she is unable to recognize faces (face-blindness). Together they make a perfect pair. I love how Eagle bring her into his found family. He recognizes that her condition makes her more vulnerable than some. At the same time, he values and respects her intelligence and the way she can use her other senses to help compensate for her condition. If I had one un-positive thing to say about this, it is that I wish the author allowed Taylor to use her sense of hearing more is the recognition of people. If her sense of smell is so heightened, I would think her sense of hearing and ability to distinguish voices would be just as valuable. Unfortunately, that is never utilized and I felt like that was a miss.

Taylor ends up being stalked by a serial killer, her condition making her less aware that it is happening. The guy stalking her, Brett, is a seriously sick individual. His thoughts are dark and twisted. Readers are also given some detailed background into some truly horrible things that Eagle has seen in the course of his duty. I love that Taylor is able to use her wits to avoid her stalker and also that Eagle and his team plays a part in her rescue. I adore the friendships that Taylor forms with Skylar and the rest of the Silverstone crew. I really liked the steamy scenes between Eagle and Taylor and the emotional connection they share from the beginning. The pace of the story was excellent and had a very hard time setting the book down. I needed to know what was going to happen next. The epilogue sets up the next book, and I am dying to read it. This was a thoroughly engaging read. If you like romantic suspense: this author is known for delivering and I was not disappointed.

TW: Stalker, descriptions of violence and sexual assault against women and children that happened off the page in the past.

A Tale of Three Signings (Spring 2024 book signing recap)

Over the past seven weeks I attended three book signings, each two weeks apart, I started at the Sweetgrass Author Event in Charleston, SC. From there I visited some family in West Virginia and Pennsylvania before my oldest daughter and I traveled to Ellicott City, MD, for Charm City Romanticon. After that, I returned home to Colorado before driving to Aurora for Readers Take Denver, where I was assisting Sara Madderson/Elodie Hart and also had a reader ticket. Below I will share some pictures and a recap of each signing as it was for me.  Sweetgrass was the fifth signing event I have attended that was put on by Southern Belles. It was also undoubtably the largest. With a stellar author lineup, there were a lot of tickets sold. In my opinion, probably too many. For a six hour signing, I was able to get to a shockingly few authors in my time there. They hit a few snags with this one.  First, let me talk about the city of Charleston.  Rich in history, with out of this world southern cu

Best Reads of 2023

2023 has come to an end and  as a result I have had some time to look back on my best reads from last year.  It is always fun to remember the fantastic books I read.  I love thinking about the worlds the authors created for my escape and enjoyment.  I also am able to see where I had some gaps in my reading.  I read most sub-genres and tropes, but I did not read a single fantasy romance last year.  That made me sad.  I will need to fix that in 2024.  My reading is typically on the lighter side of the spectrum.  Dark romance readers will only find a couple of books in that category here.  Most of my reads are also steamy, with open door scenes that are sometimes explicit and appropriate for mature readers.  My reviews are available on the blog if you need more details about what I liked about a book.  Also, I am including Amazon links to the books so you can read the blurb and decide for yourself if you think my favorite reads are books you might enjoy. Looking at the numbers at the end

Book reviews from the week of May 19th

Happy weekend. This week I read three ARCs and two books from my TBR.  All three ARCs will release the first week of June and the two books on my TBR have been on my kindle for a while. They served as perfect palette cleansers between these wonderful ARCs. Both books from my TBR offered heroines with disability. In The Marquess and I, Willow is blind. In Wolf Signs, the heroine is deaf. I felt like the authors handled both situations well within their stories and it made them interesting reads. Check out my reviews and add these to your TBR today if they grab you. I don't think you will regret it. Happy reading!
