Book reviews from the week of September 5th

I had an AMAZING- 5 Star reading week.  I read three ARCs, one book from my TBR, had one book from my TBR that I was able to read and listen to, and listened to one Audible novella.  Julie Capulet's new release (a murder mystery under J. Capulet) was outstanding and I could not put it down.  Smarty Pants, by Marika Ray, is a new adult romance gem that is uber-hot and funny.  Annie Dyer's Wedding Agreement had me falling hard for Noah and Imogen- romantic and hot.  Freya Barker has been on my list for a while and I picked up Keeping 6, not realizing it is set in Durango, where I live.  I loved it and can't wait to read more.  Finally, I was able to listen to a cute and steamy novella by Helena Hunting featuring Jacob Morgan and Rose Dioro, who I will meet at Indies Invade Philly.

I am so excited for these upcoming book signings, and the excuse to read so many new-to-me authors in preparation for meeting them.  I am just exploring audio books, as I have only listened to a few before, but this week I was able to clean and reorganize my home office while listening.  I can certainly see the advantages of audio and I look forward to exploring that more in the coming weeks.

My newly organized home office.

Beautiful Savages by J. Capulet

ARC: Release Date-9/14/21 9/7/21

5 STARS

Written in third person from multiple POV, this book by J. Capulet is a departure from Julie Capulet’s other books.  The story follows the Savage siblings.  The three brothers and two sisters are all ridiculously wealthy, beautiful, and talented.  All five of them wish for a love like the one their parents shared, despite looking like they have everything.  The author made me feel invested in each of the Savages.  There are many characters in this book, but all are well-developed and serve a purpose to the overall story line.

The story begins with reports of a murder and the wedding of the year and lets readers know that the Savage siblings are somehow involved.  The book tells the story of each sibling finding love while dropping clues about the murder.  There is a large cast of characters and the story kept me on the edge of my seat.  I took notes as I read to try to figure out the who, and the how before the book told me because that is just how I am.  The author does a fantastic job of keeping the suspense and I could not stop reading until the end of the book when all was revealed.  The epilogue sews up the final details of all the stories and gave me the HEAs I wanted.  I loved how it all came together.  It was like many pieces of the puzzle being pulled together slowly to form a dramatic and interesting picture.  This was completely enjoyable, and it reminded me of the books I read in my early teens.  The author had stated that she too read books like Hollywood Wives and that they served as inspiration for this kind of book.  She nailed it and I loved it.   The perfect book for an end of summer, or anytime read.

(This book released on 9/7/21, one week earlier than the planned release of 9/14/21)

Smarty Pant (Sisters From Hell #3) by Marika Ray

ARC: Release Date- 9/16/21

5 STARS

Brant (25) is working on his master’s degree when he meets Vee (21) the first time.  She has just run away from her wedding, and she is a vision on a paddleboard.  Their love story is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

The attraction between them is instant and hot.  Brant fights his physical attraction to Vee because at first, he sees her as the party girl that she has always made herself out to be.  I love Vee’s struggle to figure out how to behave in a more mature way and “be a grown up”.  She is courageous and tough, though her impulsiveness sometimes lands her in trouble.  Brant operates in a very structured way, and he is drawn to Vee despite her crazy impulsiveness.  The heat and the hot scenes between these two are something else.  Steamy almost seems too tame a label when they finally come together, fearless and taking risks.

As always, the small town of Auburn Hill and the people who live there is entertaining.  Vee’s family is funny and sweet as they learn to accept that Vee, the baby, is growing up.  Funny, hot, and heart-warming, this may be my favorite book of the series so far.  And that says something because I loved the other two.  I definitely recommend this one.

The Wedding Agreement by Annie Dyer

ARC: Release Date- 9/23/21

#FakeRleationship #FamilySeries #ARC

5 STARS

This is book one in the new Green Family series, which is a spin-off from both the Callaghan Green and Severton Search and Rescue series.  It can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA for Noah and Imogen.  It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

I adored Noah.  He is kind, handsome, hot, and intelligent.  Imogen is a smart woman who wants it all but isn’t sure she can swing it with the time she spends on her career.  She is interesting and kind, and I loved her. When Noah needs a bride, Imogen volunteers for the task.  An agreement is drawn up and a wedding is planned.

I love the development of the relationship between Noah and Imogen.  I love that they knew each other at school, reunite as solicitor and client, become friends, and then so much more.  There is kindle-melting heat between them.   There are several super-hot scenes as they get to know each other.  I stayed up way too late the first night reading and then grabbed it immediately when I got up yesterday and read until I finished. I still can’t stop thinking about these two characters.  It is tough to put into words how much I loved them and their story.  I can’t recommend this one enough.  It seems like 5 stars is not enough.

British Bachelor (Cocky Hero Club) by K.K. Allen

#CelebrityRomance

5 STARS

I have been meaning to read this author for a while now, but just never quite got there. Now, in preparation of attending the Holidays with the Belles book signing later this month, I am trying to read a book by each of the authors I will meet there if I have not already read something by them. This book is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

Liam, getting over a scandal following his appearance on The British Bachelor TV show, escapes to Providence, Rhode Island. There he meets Chelsea, who is a nanny for his friend's children. Chelsea is taking a leap to pursue her dream of writing while working as a nanny. I loved the instant attraction between them. I laughed many times over the course of the book. The heat between the characters is hot and sexy. I love the friendship they form along the way and I really loved their HEA.

I could clearly hear each character's voice in my head and felt like I knew them. I love that Liam tries hard to do the right thing, yet it doesn't always work out the way he thinks it will. I really enjoyed Liam as it made me remember my girlhood dream of being swept away by a suave Englishman. *sigh* This was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more books by this author and meeting her in Dallas later this month.

Keeping 6 (Rock Point #1) by Freya Barker

Audible Narration by Christian Fox and Muffy Newtown

#RomanticSuspense #FBI #OppositesAttract #AudioBook

5 STARS

This was my first book by this author in preparation of attending the Indies Invade Philly book signing event. I used a read and listen approach to this book, listening to the first 23 chapters on audible plus and reading the last 14 chapters through kindle unlimited. It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

Damian is an FBI agent assigned at the field office in Durango, Colorado. Kerry is a book store owner who has been finding her independence and success after her marriage ended. At first they do not get along. In addition to the sparks that fly with them immediately, they share a momentary history from a couple of years ago. In the prologue we learn that Damian is part of the team that rescued Kerry from a kidnapping two years ago. As I got into the first chapters of the book, the recollection of the events does not match the events in the prologue. That is the only somewhat negative thing I can say about the book at all.

I loved the chemistry and heat between the characters. I love the suspense plot as Damian works the case regarding some stolen valuable books. Kerry ends up in trouble time and again. (Readers who do not care for the damsel in distress plot may want to pass.) I loved the setting of Durango. I have lived in Durango over two years at this point and it is obvious that the author has knowledge of the area. Restaurants, geography, and local descriptions are accurate and contain insider knowledge. (CJ's Diner is real and yes, the food is amazing.) The relationships between the team members on the case is interesting and kept deliberately ambiguous as the team tries to find the insider working on the wrong side of the law. The book is well-written, the characters are fully developed, flawed, and feel realistic. I adored the trust that forms between Damian and Kerry along the way. It was beautiful to read.

I have only listened to a few audiobooks, but I found this one to be engaging and easy to listen to. I loved the dual narration and felt like they really owned the voices of the characters. It made my day fly by as I listened while rearranging my home office space.

This was a very enjoyable read/listen and I will be reading more of this series and author in the future.

Dude in Distress by Helena Hunting

Audible Narration by Rose Dioro and Jacob Morgan

#ForcedProximity #OppositesAttract #RomanticComedy #AudioBook

5 STARS

I listened to this is as an audiobook and I loved it. The narrators perfectly captured the characters, their awkward meeting, and their story. The book is written in first person from an alternating dual POV. The characters are fun and interesting. I loved the premise of the story and fell hard for both characters, who do not conform to typical stereotypes. This was funny and steamy: I definitely recommend.

Book reviews for books read January 19th-24th

Happy weekend! I decided that since I hit 7 books this week I should just go ahead and push this out today. I will read at least one more today but you will see that review next week. I had a gap between ARCs! I went back and finished the Kings of Avalier series that I started in February 2024.  SO GOOD! They are new adult, which is not my norm, but the fantasy realm made them un-put-down-able. I am thrilled to meet the author in Phoenix in a couple of weeks. I read the next book in the J. Saman series I am making my way through. Those Abbot-Fritz brothers are something else. I adore that whole family. I read four novellas with 2 of those being new-to-me authors. Coco Miller's book was a fun billionaire read, and Regine Abel's Prime Mating Agency was GOLD. You will see in my review that I loved this first in series book, and I am super excited to read the rest of them. I read a wonderful mafia novella by Lee Savino. He is truly obsessed with the girl without it being a terri...

Book reviews for books read October 20th-31st

I read two arcs in the second part of October. They were both wonderful reads. Obviously, my personal life has impacted my reading as I only finished 5 books this month. I can't tell you when the last time was that I read so little. The positive part was all of the books I read this month were very good. Until next time, happy reading! Can't Believe You Came (Mile High Matched #5)  by Christina Hovland ARC: Release Date- 10/24/2025 #CinnamonRollHero #OppositesAttract #ARC I am voluntarily writing this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book. It is written in third person, can be read as a standalone, and ends with a HEA. I have loved this series from the beginning. It is wonderful to finally see the last Dvornakov get their HEA. Zach is a cinnamon roll hero to love. He falls first, fast, and hard for Piper. Piper, who is type A personified, does her best to control every situation she is in and Zach is an outlier. His calm and steady presence c...

Book reviews from the week of June 7th

The weekend is almost over as I type this but this is me running behind this week. What a week it has been! I have worked a lot at the job, the hubby had surgery, and we celebrated both my 33rd wedding anniversary and Father's Day.  I read one ARC, two books from my TBR, and one new-to-me author. I have found that after I read a really good book I need to read something a little different to get over the book hangover. That happened twice this week. After I finished the Harlow James ARC, I read an escort book by Leigh James that has been on my kindle for ages. After I read Lyndsey Gallagher's newest release, I started Escort Training which I think I picked up free a while back. That led me down a rabbit hole to reading the whole series. I have decided to review that whole series together as opposed to reviewing each book individually as they are really one story on three stages. It was a fabulous variety of reads this week and now I need to get serious and get back to ARCs. ...
