Book reviews from the week of July 25th

This was a crazy busy week at work for me.   I ended up working a lot.  However, I was able to read two ARCs, a Rom Com recommended by an author's newsletter, and I finally started the Broken Crown trilogy.  As a result, I had an amazing week.  Lauren Blakely's finale of her Men of Summer series gave me an epic love story, an awesome HEA and a happy heart.  Tawna Fenske's next installment in the Juniper Ridge series sees Lauren reunite with Nick when they are both finally on the same page.  Erin McCarthy's book made me laugh and gave me a sweet HEA.  And I am completely sucked into Maria Luis' Broken Crown series.  You can bet that I am reading the next book now.  Keep reading to see my reviews of these fantastic books.  I wish you happy reading and an endless TBR.

Winning With Him (Men of Summer #2) by Lauren Blakely

#MaleMaleRomance #SportsRomance #SecondChance #Duet #ARC

5 STARS

This is book 2 of the Men of Summer duet and continues the story of Declan and Grant.  This series needs to be read in order.  It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

One of my favorite things to read about in romance is personal growth the characters go through so they can be the best part of the relationship in their HEA.  This book has that in spades.  Gah!!!!   Grant and Declan both grow so much over the course of their time apart.  They both become who they need to be to succeed in a mature and loving relationship.  I love that the author gave them this time to grow and have a shot at success together.  This book packs some serious heat, some deeply intimate non-physical moments between the characters, love, romance, friendship, and some laughs.  This story is deep, thorough, and emotional.  I laughed, swooned, melted, ached, and loved right along side these beautifully written men.  It takes five years for these two to go from attraction and passion to deep and consuming love.  Their love makes me so happy. This author always does such a great job with both sports romance and her male/male couples and this book is the pinnacle of both.  I absolutely loved it.

Show Down (Juniper Ridge #3) by Tawna Fenske

ARC: Release Date- September 2021?

#SecondChance #RomanticComedy #FamilySeries #ARC

5 STARS

Lauren and Nick have a history.  Their history includes love, passion, hurt, misunderstanding, and embarrassment.  Lauren and Nick have a future, but it is a future they must work a little to get.  Their story is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

The author does an excellent job showing the reader the love that Nick and Lauren used to have, while also allowing the reader to feel the hurt and embarrassment of their breakup.  I appreciated that Nick and Lauren have inside jokes and ways of communicating that they developed before that allow them to still know each other now.  I love how they both have some issues with their parents yet are close with their siblings.  I appreciated the family dynamics at play.   Set in the world of a reality TV show/social experiment, there are many funny secondary characters and events that arise that made me laugh.

Nick and Lauren have chemistry and passion between them as well as feelings that never really went away.  I love that they get a second chance at their HEA.  I was especially thankful to the author for giving us a story that demonstrated perfectly how people grow over time.  I love that though they were always in love, that they were not where they each needed to be to be together before.  I love that they were both able to grow in a way that when the right time did come, they fit together perfectly.  This was a sweet and spicy book that warmed my heart and sets us up for the next books in the series.  I can’t wait.

The Player and the Bookworm (Legends #2)

by Erin McCarthy

#SportsRomance #OneNightStand #SuprisePregnancy #RomanticComedy

4.5 STARS

Olek and Sydney meet on New Year's Eve and end up sharing a night that changes their lives forever. Their story is written in first person from an alternating dual POV. In addition, the reader is treated to a couple of sections written from Dak's POV, which are highly entertaining.

Olek and Sydney have chemistry for days. They have hot and passionate moments together and then go their separate ways. That is, until Sydney is late and a baby is imminent. I loved how Sydney handled the surprise. In some ways, her analytical and studious character communicates very effectively. In others, both characters have to learn new communication skills because of their parental baggage with their mothers. I love how possessive Olek is of Sydney, even at the beginning. I appreciated how his bossiness could be exciting for Sydney while at the same time be less than ideal. I love that they both have fears and doubts about becoming parents, like most people do. I loved the scenes at the doctors' office and I especially enjoyed their conversations trying to come up with the names for the baby. They both learn a lot about each other and themselves over the course of the pregnancy and I loved their super sweet HEA.

An Oath to Take (Broken Crown Trilogy #0.5)
by Maria Luis

#Prequel #FamilySeries #RomanticSuspense

5 STARS

Written in first person from multiple POV, this novella prequel sets up the Broken Crown series. Readers learn how Aileen becomes connected to the crown, how she meets William, and what oath is taken. I am seriously looking forward to reading the rest of the series which feels like it has been on my list forever.

Road to Fire (Broken Crown Trilogy #1) by Maria Luis

#RomanticSuspense #DarkRomance #FamilySeries

5 STARS

Secrets. Lies. Loyalty. Betrayal. Hate. Love. Passion. Pain. Fire. Ice. Danger. Destruction. Love.

The first book in the Broken Crown Trilogy, this book tells the story of Saxon Priest and Isla Quinn. It ends with their HEA. There is an underlying story which runs through all three books in the series and the books should be read in order. This book does end with a tiny cliffhanger involving the over-arching subplot of the series. It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

This book weaves a story that takes place in a reimagined history of England. There are complicated layers of secrets, lies, manipulations, and danger at play. I loved the twists and turns throughout the story. I adored Isla. Though she is somewhat naïve at times, I love how fierce and brave she is. Her courage and determination are remarkable. She is a smart cookie with balls of steel. Saxon is tough and has had a difficult life. I appreciated that the author gives the reader a solid picture of what has happened in his life to make him who he is today. I loved reading about the relationship dynamics between the three brothers. I love the subplot of danger and conflicted loyalties. The heat and passion between the Saxon and Isla is intense and satisfying. Your Kindle may melt a bit.

I was not sure how the author was going to breach the divide between Saxon and Isla to get to their HEA. I really could not put the book down till I knew the answer, and I loved how she worked it out. I put off reading book one till book three was almost here. In hindsight, I should have read it when it released and just read it again now. This is a series I am sure to read more than once.

Book reviews for books read May 3rd - May 10th

Happy weekend!  I read two ARCs this week. They were both very different and both very good. Marika Ray's new book is going to be the perfect summer read. Take it to the lake or the beach and fully enjoy the quirky romance between Maple and Holt. I promise you will adore the meddling seniors along the way. Then I read an arc by a debut author and it knocked  my socks off. When was the last time you got a book hangover from a brand new author? Yeah, it is a rare thing but it happened to me this week.  Check my reviews and add these to your TBR. You wont be sorry. Until next time, happy reading. Anchored by Marika Ray ARC: Release Date- 05/13/2025 #FakeRelationship #ForcedProximity #SmallTown #SecondChance #ARC I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book. This standalone is written in first person from an alternating dual POV and ends with a HEA. Maple (32) is having a crisis of confidence due to many factors when sh...

Best Reads of 2024

It is 2025! It feels like 2024 flew by.  This year's "best of" list is a little different.  In part this is due to time constraints and in part due to the fact that some trope categories have a LOT of excellent reads.  I just could not narrow them down to even eight for the graphics. I obviously have my favorite tropes, as this list will tell you. If you don't see a trope here on this list, it may be that I read one and it just wasn't quite a five star read for me. Most of the books I read are either four or five star reads. I have found what I like, and I tend to stick to it. You can search the labels on the main page of my blog or search in the general search bar to pull up books from another category and read my reviews. If a book is on this list, it was a five star read for me. That means I loved it, I found no major flaws in timeline, editing, or characters, and I would want to read it again. The links I am including are for Amazon out of ease, but several o...

Book reviews for books read May 11th-25th

I read three ARCs and 2 books from my TBR in the last 2 weeks. I feel good about that considering that life at home has been pretty full lately. May has been an excellent reading month for me. There are so many good releases right now, it is impossible for me to keep up. These are all worth adding to your TBR. Check my reviews and add them to your list. Until next time, happy reading. Built To Last (Park Avenue Promise #3) by Lexi Blake ARC: Release Date- 05/27/2025 #EnemiesToLovers #Celebrity #Workplace  #ARC I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book. This is the third book in the series, and it is written in first person from Harper’s POV. This book is driven heavily by dialogue, and I personally did not miss having the male POV. Though it fully contains the love story of Harper and Reid, I think readers will gain the most value from reading this series in order. The friendship and found family relationship between Ivy, ...
