Book reviews from the week of July 4th

This has been a phenomenal week of reading!!!  I will admit, I struggled to keep up this week as the ARCs flowed in fast and furious.  And I loved every second of it!  A reader cannot go wrong with any of these books.  Catherine Bybee brought me action and suspense with fierce heroines and fantastic heroes in the Richter Series.  Lauren Blakely brought her trademark heat and swoon with her Men of Summer Male/Male romance duet and prequel. I just love grant and can't wait for his HEA in book 2 later this month.  Pippa Grant brought big smiles to my face and a melt ot my heart with her latest Fireballs romance. (Max is awesome and I just want to hug him.) Lucy Score kept me awake at night because I could not put her newest Riley Thorn book down to go to bed.  Never mind that I had to get up in three hours to go to work.  Everly Ashton brought me the beginning of an all new series of handyman brother with Rent-A-Husband.  I just can't say enough of how much I enjoyed my favorite hobby this week and the authors that bring me such a variety of wonderful reading choices.

Changing the Rules (Richter #1) by Catherine Bybee

5 STARS

This story follows Claire and Cooper and picks up about 6 1/2 years after Sasha's book, Say It Again, when the Richter school leadership was taken down. It it written in third person from a dual POV.

I fell in love with Claire in Sasha's book and I was so excited when I could tell Cooper really had a thing for her then. But she was young, and she did need some time to grow into her own person before they got together. I love that Cooper let time pass before he made his move, even though he was already in love with her. I love how Claire has matured and the relationships she has built within the team in her chosen family. I love her friendship with Jax, and that it survived everything they have gone through. I love the heat with so much tenderness that Cooper and Claire share. It was romantic and hot at the same time. Their first kiss is one I will not forget.

The story carries all of the suspense, twists, and turns I expect from this author. I was thoroughly invested in the case they are working and on the edge of my seat through a lot of it. I love how well this author develops her characters and their world. With undercover operatives, bad cops, Russian mafia, high school students, and a case that makes you realize how much some of this stuff really does go on in our world. I forget between books how much I adore her characters and it was a real treat to visit some of them again in this story. I seriously need to find time to reread all of her work again, because she truly sets the bar and is one of the reasons I cam back to reading romance a few years ago.

A Thin Disguise (Richter #2) by Catherine Bybee

Olivia, a former assassin, finds love with Mr. FBI in this second installment of the Richter series.  It begins almost a year after Changing the Rules and is written in third person.  In addition to Olivia and Leo’s POV, there are times when the reader is also given Neil’s POV as he is the one who has an idea of who Olivia really was before her memory loss.

Olivia has been through a lot.  Though I met her in other books, I really enjoyed getting to know her and her history in this one.  The author did an excellent job making the character one that I could feel sympathetic toward despite the things she has done in the past.  Leo is a good guy and I loved seeing him fall hard for Olivia.  His shock as he learned about her abilities at the same time she did was priceless.  Because of her amnesia, they are given a chance to fall in love.  If Leo or Olivia had realized who she really was in the beginning, they never would have gotten that chance. Their intimate moments are hot and steamy, while connecting them on an emotional level that is all new, especially for Olivia.  I adore the relationship the team forms with Olivia, especially the bond between her and Sasha considering their history.  Neil is always the most awesome guy, and he is in this book too.  I love how they are wary of her while she does not know who she is because they have all been up against her skills in the past, and yet they want to give her the best chance at survival and a shot at a different life.

The story is fast paced, action packed, and intense with sprinkles of humor woven in.  I had a ridiculously hard time when I had to put it down to do real life things.  I love the way this author writes the operative and suspense elements mixed with romance.  I cannot wait for the next book.

Max and Tillie Jean’s story was a laugh out loud bright spot in my week.  It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

I have loved meeting Max in previous books, and I really enjoyed getting to know him better.  He is a man who had a rough childhood with his only constant being baseball.  I love his drive to succeed and his love of the game. The author did an amazing job making sure I understood his struggles.  He has been a player, but deep down, he does not believe he deserves to be loved and that melted me.  TJ is hilarious. I love her enthusiasm and her fire.  She is another character I really enjoyed getting to know on a deeper level.  I love her relationships with her family, especially her brothers.  I really appreciated the friendship she and Max eventually form.  In the black moment, I felt her heartache.

This book made me literally laugh out loud many times.  It also moved me as TJ and max both open to each other and the possibilities around them.  I love the small town of Shipwreck and the antics that go on.  There are some epic pranks in this book.  I love the banter, the fun, the family (born and found), and the support the characters give to each other. Max and TJ have plenty of heat between them to steam up the page, while connecting on a level neither one of them really expected. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read that I absolutely loved and will be a book I read more than once.

Riley Thorn and the Corpse in the Closet by Lucy Score

Mystery and quirky characters make a ton of fun.

This is the second book in the series and follows Nick and Riley as they learn to live and work with each other.  It is written in third person from an alternating dual POV. Readers will get the most enjoyment from this book if they read book one forst as they will better understand the range of characters and their history together.

I love that they are learning to communicate in this book.  They are dealing with the fear of losing each other while pursuing a murderer.  I love the mystery of the cases they work.  I love that Riley is gaining confidence in her abilities.  The secondary characters still shine in this book, and I absolutely adore the friendships and family relationships that are explored.  Our favorite wise muscled guy, Gabe, is present as Riley’s guide and help and he is still awesome.

There is heat, laughs, lots of shenanigans, danger, glitter, and quirky fun mixed together in this book to create an entertaining read that I stayed up way too late to finish instead of going to bed.  I loved this one and I highly recommend for a fun read with some mystery, suspense, and laughs.

Rent-A-Husband (Abbott Brothers #1) by Everly Ashton

4.5 STARS

Lucas and Cami meet through a plumbing accident and become so much more.  Their story is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

I love the friendship they form as their arrangement morphs through several identities.  I love how Lucas is a good guy (who is good with his hands).  I appreciated that Cami has some baggage and scars to work through. I love the laugh-out-loud moments, the heat, and the fantastic secondary characters.  This was an excellent start to a new series, and I cannot wait to read what comes next.

Crushing on Him (Men of Summer #0.5) by Lauren Blakely

This prequel is written in first person from Grant's POV. It sets the stage for the Men of Summer Duet which will tell Grant and Declan's full story. I felt like this was an quick enjoyable read and I look forward to reading the rest of their story.

Scoring With Him (Men of Summer #1) by Lauren Blakely

ARC: Release Date- 7/9/2021

#MMRomance #SportsRomance #ARC

The summer is heating up.

This author delivers some of the best MM romance and this does not disappoint.  It is book one in the Men of Summer Duet (with book 2 coming soon) and is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.  It does end in a cliffhanger, and I was aware of that going in.

I have loved Grant in previous books because he is such a good friend.  Though I have met Declan in other books I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him better in this story.  The drama of pro sports, a small age gap, a virgin, and a bucket list combine to create a story that was engaging and full of heat.  I seriously cannot wait for book two.  I desperately want them to have their HEA.

A Tale of Three Signings (Spring 2024 book signing recap)

Over the past seven weeks I attended three book signings, each two weeks apart, I started at the Sweetgrass Author Event in Charleston, SC. From there I visited some family in West Virginia and Pennsylvania before my oldest daughter and I traveled to Ellicott City, MD, for Charm City Romanticon. After that, I returned home to Colorado before driving to Aurora for Readers Take Denver, where I was assisting Sara Madderson/Elodie Hart and also had a reader ticket. Below I will share some pictures and a recap of each signing as it was for me.  Sweetgrass was the fifth signing event I have attended that was put on by Southern Belles. It was also undoubtably the largest. With a stellar author lineup, there were a lot of tickets sold. In my opinion, probably too many. For a six hour signing, I was able to get to a shockingly few authors in my time there. They hit a few snags with this one.  First, let me talk about the city of Charleston.  Rich in history, with out of thi...

Best Reads of 2024

It is 2025! It feels like 2024 flew by.  This year's "best of" list is a little different.  In part this is due to time constraints and in part due to the fact that some trope categories have a LOT of excellent reads.  I just could not narrow them down to even eight for the graphics. I obviously have my favorite tropes, as this list will tell you. If you don't see a trope here on this list, it may be that I read one and it just wasn't quite a five star read for me. Most of the books I read are either four or five star reads. I have found what I like, and I tend to stick to it. You can search the labels on the main page of my blog or search in the general search bar to pull up books from another category and read my reviews. If a book is on this list, it was a five star read for me. That means I loved it, I found no major flaws in timeline, editing, or characters, and I would want to read it again. The links I am including are for Amazon out of ease, but several o...

Book reviews from the week of May 19th

Happy weekend. This week I read three ARCs and two books from my TBR.  All three ARCs will release the first week of June and the two books on my TBR have been on my kindle for a while. They served as perfect palette cleansers between these wonderful ARCs. Both books from my TBR offered heroines with disability. In The Marquess and I, Willow is blind. In Wolf Signs, the heroine is deaf. I felt like the authors handled both situations well within their stories and it made them interesting reads. Check out my reviews and add these to your TBR today if they grab you. I don't think you will regret it. Happy reading! My Royal Showmance (Park Avenue Promise #2)  by Lexi Blake ARC: Release Date- 06/04/2024 #Royal #SecretRomance #ARC Book two in the series is written in first person from Anika’s POV and ends in a HEA.
