Book reviews from the week of May 2nd

This was a good week of reading.  I read four ARCs then I picked a book out of my kindle library to meet a component of a reading challenge. That led to me being sucked into a murder mystery that took the four book series to solve.  Yet I am not complaining. I enjoyed all eight books I read this week.  The ARCs ranged from comedy to suspense to utterly romantic.  The Vanessa Vale series was super hot with interesting characters and a well-developed murder mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed.  The S.L. Scott book was my first by that author and I smiled the whole way through.  Everly Ashton's book wrapped up that series and made me laugh.  The Marie James book, also my first book by her, was hard to put down.  I will definitely be reading more of the Blackbridge Security guys.

How is it that I read eight books this week, yet added at least twenty-five to my TBR?  I am not sure, but I do know it is an excellent problem to have.  Here are some books to grow your TBR this week.

Good on Paper (Love in Apartment 3B #3)

This is book three in the Love in Apartment #B series, but it can be read as a standalone.  It is written in first person from a dual POV.

Marlowe is the last of her friends to remain single.  She is baffled because she is the one who has always been in love with love, and she has been searching for “the one”.  Meanwhile, her nemesis at work causes her all kinds of anger as she envisions popping his head off like the head of a dandelion.  Marlowe and Isaac trade barbs, insults, and banter that includes quotes from Shakespeare.  It is fun and is the surface presentation to an intense mutual attraction.  When they end up spending more time together, respect and understanding grows along with their physical desire for each other.

I loved Marlowe.  She has such a romantic heart.  At the same time, she is a driven professional who is determined to achieve her goals while feeding her dreams on the side quietly.  Isaac is trying to be successful at work, but he is blindsided by his attraction to Marlowe.  I enjoyed reading as he falls head over heels.

I loved this third book in the series.  The girls share a special friendship and I really loved that.  There is plenty of heat, humor, and heart in this final book in this series.

The One I Want by S.L. Scott

ARC: Release Date-5/10/2021

Grumpy meets sunshine and learns there is more to life than work.

This was my first book by this author.  The blurb said this book was smile-inducing and I certainly agree.  It is written in first person from a dual POV.

Andrew is responsible, focused, a little bit grumpy, and not looking for anything like a relationship.  Juni is a super-smart, a bit of a free spirit, and trying to focus on the good things in life.  They need each other a lot more than they realize.  Their meet cute is adorably stinky.  Their friendship is fun: I love when Juni catches Andrew off guard, which is often.  I love that he falls for her more than he realizes.  I really like that he recognizes Juni’s defense mechanisms and works to disarm them.  They are passionate, fun, and full of heart.  I smiled a lot.

I need to mention the secondary characters.  There were a few that played important roles in this story.  Gil, Mrs. Hendricks, and Mr. Clark jump off the page and I love the way they look out for Juni. These are the people who have become Juni’s family, and they have a lot of wisdom to impart.  I also loved reading about Andrew’s brother Nick.  I will certainly be reading his story soon.  There was a lot to love in this book.  Romance, passion, humor, and love.  Also, I adored the grand gesture and the proposal- incredibly romantic.  This may have been my first book by this author, but I guarantee I will be reading more.

Calculated Risk (Blackbridge Security #5) by Marie James

ARC: Release Date- 5/11/2021

4 STARS

This was my first book by this author, and I enjoyed it.  It is written in first person from a dual POV.

Quentin in a big, burly guy, who is not thrilled to teach the beginning firearms class to a bunch of women.  There is something about Hayden that draws him to her though.  I enjoyed their banter.  They were adorably awkward as they got to know each other.  I appreciated the difference in their sizes, though I would have liked details on actual heights for characters for the visual.  I felt like I had a decent picture of Quentin, but I never felt like I had a good description of Hayden except that she is tiny.  The heat and attraction between them is good, and I enjoyed it as they got together.

I liked the plot and fully understood Hayden’s fear.  She ends up in several situations where she is in danger, and Quentin gets to be her hero.  I wish there had been a more detailed resolution to the danger elements.  It felt a little rushed near the end.  I really liked the relationships among the men at Blackbridge and I hope to read more of those in the future.

Good to be Bad (Good Love #3)

by Lili Valente & Lauren Blakely

ARC: Release Date- 5/11/2021

West is a Brit transplanted to NYC.  Gigi is a Brooklyn native.  They end up in shops across the street from each other and competing in a baking competition against each other.  They find this out after they have a super-hot night together when they meet at a bar.  Their story is told in first person from a dual POV.

I love Gigi.  She is competent, intelligent, competitive, and unafraid to go after what she wants.  West is smooth, charming, hot, and intelligent.  Both are kind and likable.  Their chemistry is strong, and they connect emotionally very quickly.   The baking competition was fun to read about, and I appreciated the friendship they form with Willow, another shop owner. I loved their families and the support and love that was present for them.

This was an enjoyable read without a lot of angst or drama.  There are some funny moments with a bit of heat.  IT was a light, fun read with a sassy heroine and a suave hero.

Mountain Darkness (Wild Mountain Men #1)

by Vanessa Vale

#SmallTown #RomanticSuspense #MFM

4 STARS

This ménage romance is book one in a series. It is written in first person from multiple POV.
Nix is the gruff detective. His best friend Donovan is the sunny, fun guy who happens to be an attorney in the DA's office. Kit is the girl from the wrong side of the tracks that they always wanted. She is also the roommate of a girl that turns up murdered, making her a prime suspect.
I love the heat, and the protectiveness the guys have for Kit. I appreciate Kit's insecurities. I love how resilient she is in the face of outright meanness from some members of their small town of Cutthroat, Montana. The author delivers a smoking hot romance between the men and Kit as I expected after reading the Bridgewater series. What I did not expect, was to be sucked into a murder mystery. I ended up binging the whole series.
I loved the plot, the passion, and the characters. There are a few errors that should have been caught in proofreading. They were a little frustrating, but did not take away from the enjoyment of the book. The whole series was a fun and fast read.

Mountain Delights (Wild Mountain Men #2)

by Vanessa Vale

#SmallTown #RomanticSuspense #MFM

5 STARS

This ménage romance is book two in a series. It is written in first person from multiple POV.

Lucas and Hailey have already begun a relationship when they decide to add Lucas' best friend Cy into it. There are some funny moments when they surprise Cy with this idea. The murder mystery in the small town continues to evolve in this book. Suspects are ruled out and secrets come to light.
I loved Hailey's confidence and her ability to go after what she wants. I love the protectiveness the guys feel for her. I love that they recognize her avoidance of certain things and help her come to grips with them. Lucas and Cy are both lovable heroes.

I loved the plot, the passion, and the characters. There are a few errors that should have been caught in proofreading. They were a little frustrating, but did not take away from the enjoyment of the book. The whole series was a fun and fast read.

Mountain Desire (Wild Mountain Men #3) by Vanessa Vale

#SmallTown #RomanticSuspense #MFM

5 STARS

This ménage romance is book three in a series. It is written in first person from multiple POV.

Samantha is a prodigy and a doctor who is fairly new to town. Mac is the tattooed bad boy and Hardin is business partner and best friend. They are perfect for Samantha and I love their protectiveness. I especially loved big, gruff Hardin: he has the softest heart. Samantha is so logical in her thought processes. I really enjoyed her personality and the dry serious nature of her person.
This book has a laugh-out-loud meet cute between Mac and Samantha. The author mixes in humor with steam. There is also some suspense and danger as the murder mystery in the series continues.

I loved the plot, the passion, and the characters. There are a few errors that should have been caught in proofreading. They were a little frustrating, but did not take away from the enjoyment of the book. The whole series was a fun and fast read.

Mountain Danger (Wild Mountain Men #4) by Vanessa Vale

#SmallTown #RomanticSuspense #MFM

5 STARS

This ménage romance is book four in a series. It is written in first person from multiple POV.

Eve is a detective with a past of abuse. Shane is the reclusive son of a movie star, and Finch is his best friend. The meet cute in this book made me laugh-out-loud and giggle snort. I loved the addition of the humor to the murder mystery. I loved Eve's friendship with Poppy, Shane's sister. I also loved the relationship Poppy and Shane have where they relay on each other. The guys are good for Eve and help her unwind and have some fun. I love how the mystery is solved in this book. I also love the relationship that Eve forms with each of the men.

I loved the plot, the passion, and the characters. There are a few errors that should have been caught in proofreading. They were a little frustrating, but did not take away from the enjoyment of the book. The whole series was a fun and fast read.

Book reviews for books read June 1st-14th

Happy weekend!  It has been a busy couple of weeks but I managed to read 6 books. Two ARCs, and four books from my TBR. I have been working on reading the backlist of Swati M.H., and managed to read all but one of her books prior to assisting her at the HEA Reader Event in Indianapolis on June 7th. Then I joyfully read two ARCs, both over 400 pages. Then I needed something a little different. I needed to break away from traditional, contemporary romance and was able to fit in a paranormal rom com and a monster romance. Now I am back to ARCs.  There are so many good books to read. I am exceedingly grateful to the authors who have written and are writing books that suck me into their imaginary worlds. Thank you authors for giving me a way to escape reality for a little while and guaranteeing me that happy ending. Till next time, happy reading. Book reviews for books read September 21st-30th

This review post is late due to a family emergency that happened about ten days ago now. I feel like I am finally getting my self together a little bit today and was able to put this together finally. During the last week of the month, I read one ARC, one book for book club, and three smutty novellas. Check out my reviews and add so books to your TBR today. My month in review. September turned out to be a good reading month for me. Most of the ARCs that I read that released in September, I actually read in August. That freed up some time to read from my TBR and finish two reading challenges. During the last week of the month, I finished the A to Z reading challenge. Earlier this month, I completed the B.A.N.G. Book Club reading challenge. I also took this as an opportunity to read new-to-me authors and fit in several novellas. Out of the 23 books I read and the 2 I did not finish, I read 19 new-to-me authors! That has to be a record for me. There is a place for smutty insta-love ...

Book reviews for books read May 26th-31st

I can't believe it is June already! This last week of May I found myself binging a series by Swati M.H. I have made working on author backlists one of my goals this year. Next weekend I will be assisting this wonderful lady at the HEA Reader event. In an effort to finish reading the books in her backlist I grabbed this series from Kindle Unlimited. And then I didn't want to stop. I will be doing a series spotlight in a few days when I get my thoughts together. In the meantime, check out my reviews. Then add this whole series to your kindle and read it. I promise, you won't be sorry. Until next time, happy reading! My Beautiful Chaos (Feel the Beat #2) by Swati M.H. #FakeRelationship #SecondChance #FriendsToLovers Yes, no, maybe so? Make it a definite “Yes”. Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this book stands on its own and ends with a HEA.
