Book reviews from the week of December 6th

This was an excellent 5 star reading week for me.  I can honestly recommend all of these books.

A Very Bossy Christmas by Kayley Loring

This laugh out loud holiday rom-com was a delight to read. It is written in first person from multiple POV. In addition to Declan and Maddie, you occasionally get the POV of Maddie's 13 year old niece, Piper.

This is a fake relationship/workplace/holiday romance. I loved Declan, who was really just looking for a good reason to be able to pursue Maddie. I love Maddie, the first woman who is able to give sass back to her boss, and she definitely does that. She is fiery and their banter is really something. It is witty and hilarious. The heat and chemistry between the two characters is off the charts! Talk about HOT!!! Their physical connection is intense because there are so many denied emotions attached. They both have families that add fantastic humorous moments. I seriously giggled throughout the book. I could not put it down, not even to watch Christmas movies with the hubby. I highly recommend this thoroughly enjoyable holiday read.

Love & Other Disasters by Terri Jones

“He was here for one reason: to get Violet back no matter what.”

“Invisibility to the opposite sex was her superpower.”- Until Him.
Violet considers herself a wallflower, especially next to her friend, Elle. When they get dressed up one night, a joke leads to Violet meeting a man under an assumed name. She sneaks out of his hotel room the next morning. Two weeks later, Violet is shocked to discover that he is going to be her new boss. JP is shocked that her name is not Katia.

I love JP. He is kind, sexy, smart, and he has a sense of humor. He has been successful in his career. He falls hard and fast for Violet. He supports her and sees a side of her that she does not allow most to see. He takes some professional risks to be with her, but he can’t stay away.

This book has workplace drama as they face truths about each other, themselves, and the state of the company. JP faces the added drama of not only trying to save the company and having the woman he has fallen for as an employee, but he is also dealing with his mother’s decline in mental state while she is far away. Having faced many of the things that JP faces from a distance as well, I thought that the author did an excellent job dealing with the many emotions that JP experiences as he takes steps to take care of his mom.

“How did he pick out a place for his mother to live the rest of her life? One in which she would forget everything and everyone.”

JP and Violet have instant heat and a love story where they both have some personal and professional challenges to overcome. Their black moment is not short, in fact it lasts nearly a year. They both need that time to come to terms with other parts of their life. For JP it is reevaluating his career and taking care of his mom. For Violet, it is addressing her family relationships, her professional future, and working on her own emotional health and well-being. They both need the time away from each other before they can be successful together and the author handles their situations extremely well.

“Sometimes working toward a healthy emotional well-being was flat out annoying. It was much easier to hide in a state of denial and self-preservation.”

Once they resolve those issues, this couple has some other very real-life other issues to address. They work with a long-distance relationship for some time while building on their love before getting to a place where compromises must be made to stay together. I love that the author does not shy away from the fact that their HEA required work, communication, and compromise just as relationships do in real life.

This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. I will be going back to read more of her work. It is well-written in the third person from a dual POV. The plot is real to life in many ways and the pacing of the book felt “just right.” This book is a standalone with a wonderful HEA. (And there are several secondary characters within the book that will have wonderful stories if the author decides to write books on their characters.)

A Holiday Road Trip and So Much More
Crew and Hazel are childhood friends who have lost touch. They are reconnected on a trip planned by his late grandfather that they follow through Germany opening a letter each day over the Christmas holiday. This new adult romance is written in first person from a dual POV.
I love the descriptions and the romance of the Christmas markets in Germany. I love the time Crew and Hazel have along the trip to talk, leading to reconnection and to forgiveness. They have a heated attraction they eventually con no longer avoid. There is plenty of humor as they tease each other. They have plenty of good drink and food along the way. Their friendship forms a beautiful foundation for so much more.
This book is a journey. It is a journey of two friends connecting and becoming more, but it is also a journey of self-discovery for each of them. They each discover what is going to be most important as they move into their future while learning about themselves. This was an excellent read and I highly recommend.

Santa Got Run Over By A Vampire
(New Orleans Nocturnes #3.5) by Carrie Pulkinen
#DarkComedy #ParanormalRomance #HolidayRomance

5 STARS

This short, dark comedy, holiday, paranormal novella is written in third person from Jane’s POV.  The story follows Jane during the week before Christmas as she deals with some interesting life complications.  First, she ran over Santa and has to turn him into a vampire.  Then,  her dad is coming to visit for the first time since she became a vampire and got married.

I love Jane and how she sometimes misses the obvious.  Her optimism is contagious though and I love her can-do mind set.  Gaston’s dry humor and the way he messes up the human turns of phrase are hilarious.  Ethan is adorable as he expresses his nerves about meeting Jane’s father.  Santa, in his state, is funny as all get out.  Readers will love the new versions of old favorite holiday songs that Santa comes out singing without much thought.  Humor, some family drama, a little heat, and a lot of magic make this a fun and different holiday read for those who like their sugar with a little bit of spice.

Book reviews for books read May 3rd - May 10th

Happy weekend!  I read two ARCs this week. They were both very different and both very good. Marika Ray's new book is going to be the perfect summer read. Take it to the lake or the beach and fully enjoy the quirky romance between Maple and Holt. I promise you will adore the meddling seniors along the way. Then I read an arc by a debut author and it knocked  my socks off. When was the last time you got a book hangover from a brand new author? Yeah, it is a rare thing but it happened to me this week.  Check my reviews and add these to your TBR. You wont be sorry. Until next time, happy reading. Anchored by Marika Ray ARC: Release Date- 05/13/2025 #FakeRelationship #ForcedProximity #SmallTown #SecondChance #ARC I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book. This standalone is written in first person from an alternating dual POV and ends with a HEA. Maple (32) is having a crisis of confidence due to many factors when sh...

Best Reads of 2024

It is 2025! It feels like 2024 flew by.  This year's "best of" list is a little different.  In part this is due to time constraints and in part due to the fact that some trope categories have a LOT of excellent reads.  I just could not narrow them down to even eight for the graphics. I obviously have my favorite tropes, as this list will tell you. If you don't see a trope here on this list, it may be that I read one and it just wasn't quite a five star read for me. Most of the books I read are either four or five star reads. I have found what I like, and I tend to stick to it. You can search the labels on the main page of my blog or search in the general search bar to pull up books from another category and read my reviews. If a book is on this list, it was a five star read for me. That means I loved it, I found no major flaws in timeline, editing, or characters, and I would want to read it again. The links I am including are for Amazon out of ease, but several o...

Book reviews for books read May 11th-25th

I read three ARCs and 2 books from my TBR in the last 2 weeks. I feel good about that considering that life at home has been pretty full lately. May has been an excellent reading month for me. There are so many good releases right now, it is impossible for me to keep up. These are all worth adding to your TBR. Check my reviews and add them to your list. Until next time, happy reading. Built To Last (Park Avenue Promise #3) by Lexi Blake ARC: Release Date- 05/27/2025 #EnemiesToLovers #Celebrity #Workplace  #ARC I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book. This is the third book in the series, and it is written in first person from Harper’s POV. This book is driven heavily by dialogue, and I personally did not miss having the male POV. Though it fully contains the love story of Harper and Reid, I think readers will gain the most value from reading this series in order. The friendship and found family relationship between Ivy, ...
