Party girl Melanie Miser has it all: looks, brains, and money. She goes through men with a distinct lack of commitment, never getting too close and never letting them get close to her.

Not even her best friend knows why.

After a lifetime of being mocked for his speech impediment, burly giant Owen rarely talks to anyone outside his family circle. He has wanted Melanie for a long time, but fears he would be just another notch in her bedpost. As their friendship strengthens, Owen still yearns for Melanie to see him as more.

Then life throws a major curveball and Melanie faces irrevocable changes. More than ever, she needs Owen to help her process the hardship of her past and the challenges of the future.

Author Bio:

ML Nystrom had stories in her head since she was a child. All sorts of stories of fantasy, romance, mystery and anything else that captured her interest. A voracious reader, she’s spent many hours devouring books; therefore, she found it only fitting she should write a few herself!

ML has spent most of my life as a performing musician and band instrument repair technician, but that doesn’t mean she’s pigeon-holed into one mold. She’s been a university professor, belly dancer, craftsperson, soap maker, singer, rock band artist, jewelry maker, lifeguard, swim coach, and whatever else she felt like exploring. As one of her students said to her once, “Life’s too short to ignore the opportunities.” She has no intention of ever stopping… so welcome to her story world. She hopes you enjoy it!

Excerpt:

“I love you.”

Those three words hit me like pointed shards of ice. In my favorite romance stories when the man makes his love confession, the woman melts into a big pile of emotional goo.  Then they have the best sex of their lives that’s full of descriptive adjectives for several pages.  Owen’s declaration didn’t fill me with fluffy feelings and thoughts.  I was totally and completely scared out of my ever-lovin’ mind.

“You can’t love me.”

“Yes, I can.”

“It’s impossible.”

“It’s not.”

“You shouldn’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Love me.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t deserve it.  I’m so fucked up, I don’t deserve anyone’s love.  I’m fuckin’ toxic.”

Owen’s voice growled in my ear as he proceeded to gut me completely.  “No one deserves to be loved.  It’s not something you have to work for either.  You don’t buy it like you do milk in a grocery store.  It’s not about clothes or looks or money.  I know your family thinks that way and I’ve seen first-hand that being rich doesn’t mean shit when it comes to loving someone.  I don’t think you do either.”

I was one big, raw open wound.  How many fucking times in my life had I sought one-night stands just to feel something?  Anything.  How many times had I let someone touch me and not known his last name? How many times did I mistake lust for love?  Was I worthy of it?  Would I ever be good enough for someone’s love?  How could I even recognize it?

Owen’s lips pressed into the spot just under my earlobe.  “Listen well, Melanie.  You know I don’t bullshit.  Ever.  There’s nothing you can do to make me love you.  Nothing you can say, nothing you can buy.  Not sex or the promise of it.  Not a house or car.  You do not and cannot make me love you.  I just do.  Something else you should figure out.  You can’t make me love you, and you can’t stop me from loving you either.”

I couldn’t contain it.  I let the torrent free and totally flooded the shoulder underneath my cheek.  My fingers dug into his skin as I clung to his strong arm.  I don’t know how long it took for me to empty.  It might have been a few minutes.  It might have been an hour.  He stayed there throughout the entire deluge, holding me, breathing into my hair, kissing my skin, and murmuring I love you’s over and over.  The shakes subsided at last.  I should have been exhausted from the roller coaster emotions of the day.  I wasn’t.  I felt alive.  I felt lighter.  Freer.  More open.  I felt…  I felt… I felt pure need.

“Owend?”  Shit, my nose was plugged up.

He knew exactly what I asked and offered.  “If I touch you now, I’m not going back to friends only.  I’m committed and I’m not leaving.  Are you ready for that?  If you’re not, I can wait.”

My Review: 5 STARS

This was my first book by this author and I immediately want to read more.  This book is part of a family series and can be read as a a standalone.  It is written in first person from a dual POV. Bot MC are complex and well-developed.  The plot kept me engaged and I did not want to put the book down.  The pacing of the book was just right.

Melanie has had some things happen that make her the person she has become and make her feel like she does not deserve love.  This is the biggest obstacle to Owen and Melanie getting to their HEA, and it is a one that takes some effort to overcome.  I liked Melanie’s determination and the fierce woman she has become despite her past.  Owen is a quiet giant with a huge heart.  I absolutely fell hard for him very early on in the book.  I loved him so much.  He is a powerfully built guy who wants to do the right thing and protect Mel on all the levels and made me swoon.   He is a giver that accepts Mel for who she is, respects her for who she is, and really wants to support her on her path.  At the same time, he recognizes that she holds the power to break his heart and that made him even more attractive to me.

There is a trigger warning included in the blurb that should be noted.  Humor, heat, and a little angst pull this together and tie it with a very nice HEA bow.  I will definitely be reading other books by this author and will be following this MacAteer family.

Book reviews for books read May 3rd - May 10th

Happy weekend!  I read two ARCs this week. They were both very different and both very good. Marika Ray's new book is going to be the perfect summer read. Take it to the lake or the beach and fully enjoy the quirky romance between Maple and Holt. I promise you will adore the meddling seniors along the way. Then I read an arc by a debut author and it knocked  my socks off. When was the last time you got a book hangover from a brand new author? Yeah, it is a rare thing but it happened to me this week.  Check my reviews and add these to your TBR. You wont be sorry. Until next time, happy reading. Anchored by Marika Ray ARC: Release Date- 05/13/2025 #FakeRelationship #ForcedProximity #SmallTown #SecondChance #ARC I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book. This standalone is written in first person from an alternating dual POV and ends with a HEA. Maple (32) is having a crisis of confidence due to many factors when sh...

Best Reads of 2024

It is 2025! It feels like 2024 flew by.  This year's "best of" list is a little different.  In part this is due to time constraints and in part due to the fact that some trope categories have a LOT of excellent reads.  I just could not narrow them down to even eight for the graphics. I obviously have my favorite tropes, as this list will tell you. If you don't see a trope here on this list, it may be that I read one and it just wasn't quite a five star read for me. Most of the books I read are either four or five star reads. I have found what I like, and I tend to stick to it. You can search the labels on the main page of my blog or search in the general search bar to pull up books from another category and read my reviews. If a book is on this list, it was a five star read for me. That means I loved it, I found no major flaws in timeline, editing, or characters, and I would want to read it again. The links I am including are for Amazon out of ease, but several o...

Book reviews for books read May 11th-25th

I read three ARCs and 2 books from my TBR in the last 2 weeks. I feel good about that considering that life at home has been pretty full lately. May has been an excellent reading month for me. There are so many good releases right now, it is impossible for me to keep up. These are all worth adding to your TBR. Check my reviews and add them to your list. Until next time, happy reading. Built To Last (Park Avenue Promise #3) by Lexi Blake ARC: Release Date- 05/27/2025 #EnemiesToLovers #Celebrity #Workplace  #ARC I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book. This is the third book in the series, and it is written in first person from Harper’s POV. This book is driven heavily by dialogue, and I personally did not miss having the male POV. Though it fully contains the love story of Harper and Reid, I think readers will gain the most value from reading this series in order. The friendship and found family relationship between Ivy, ...
